Alex Perez slams Cody Garbrandt, says he was trying to “take a shortcut” and fight “smaller guys”

Alex Perez replaces Cody Garbrandt as the challenger
“Alex Perez”, UFC’s #Rank 4 in the flyweight division gets a flyweight title shot vs the current champion “Deiveson Figueiredo” after the former Bantamweight champion “Cody Garbrandt” had to pull off the fight due to an injury.
Perez went on the Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show and discussed what he thinks about Cody, his upcoming title shot and his MMA debut behind a pizza shop.
Perez, who is a late replacement for Cody Garbrandt, was originally supposed to fight “Brandon Moreno”. Now, Alex gets to fight in the main event for a shot at the flyweight belt. Alex told Ariel that he somewhat believed in his heart that he would fight for the title. Considering how Cody has never made that weight and the covid crises, he says he was prepared and trained like he was training for a 5 round championship bout.
When asked why it wasn’t Brandon who got the call but him to be the replacement, Alex claimed it is due to his last performances. His instincts were correct as now he is not only fighting for the belt but also headline a UFC PPV!
“I felt like I deserved it” says Alex
Answering to what he felt about Cody fighting for the title instead of him or another 125lb fighter, he said “I was bummed out because I felt like I deserved it but I think Cody just can’t hang with those ‘35ers” .
He went on and said that Cody tried to take a shortcut by cutting weight and fighting smaller guys. He went on and stated that he believed Cody would not be able to make weight and even if he did, he would still not fair well against the top talent.
“It is a lot different from 35 to 25; 10 extra pounds. He has never competed at this weight, never depleted his body that bad. If he does, great, I would like to welcome him.”
