The Toronto Blue Jays are in trouble. After losing Game 1 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS), they were blown away 10-3 in Game 2 by the Seattle Mariners. Former MLB star Alex Rodriguez believes that the Canadian side lost their edge after beating the New York Yankees.

The Blue Jays finished as the No.1 seed team in the American League with a 94-68 record. As they held the tiebreaker over the Yankees, they claimed the AL East title and received a first round bye.

In the American League Division Series (ALDS), they dominated the Yankees once again. After going 8-5 against them in the regular season, the Toronto-based side blew away its opponents.

The Blue Jays registered 50 hits in 4 games and outscored them 34-19 to reach their first ALCS since 2016. Meanwhile, the Mariners dug deep and edged out the Detroit Tigers in 15 innings in Game 5 to make their first ALCS in over 24 years.

The Mariners, who came into Game 1 with just one day’s break after the chaotic Game 5, stunned the fans at Rogers Centre. After giving up a solo home run to George Springer on the very first pitch, they gave up just one more hit throughout the next 8 innings.

With them losing the series opener, the pressure was on the Blue Jays to deliver. After going 3-0 down in the top of the first inning through a 3-run home run from Julio Rodriguez, they fought back and made it a 3-3 game in the second inning.

Jorge Polanco, who hit the walk-off single in the 15th inning against the Tigers, would slam a 3-run home run in the 5th inning. A 2-run bomb from Josh Naylor in the 7th inning made it a 9-3 game. The visitors eventually ran out as 10-3 winners and took a 2-0 lead.

As the Mariners walked as the winners, one of their former stars, Alex Rodriguez, dropped a candid remark against the Blue Jays. The 14-time MLB All-Star claimed the team lost its edge after a 3-day break following a huge ALDS win against the Yankees.

First of all, when you’re a young team, sometimes it’s easier to go on the road… Then on the other side of that, if you’re the Toronto Blue Jays, you climbed the tallest mountain, which is to beat the Yankees. Then you sit out for three days, and you’re being celebrated. They’re throwing parades. You lose your edge a little bit. I’m not sure what happened. Maybe a combination of both.

The AL East side has managed just 8 hits in 2 games so far. Meanwhile, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who led the offense in the ALDS, struggled in Game 2 as well. The first baseman, who went 9-for-17 against the Yankees, is 0-for-7 in the ALCS against the Mariners.

As per reports from MLB.com, in postseason history, teams taking a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series have emerged as the winners 78 out of 93 times. Only 15 teams have managed to come back after going 2-0 down. On top of that, teams winning Games 1 and 2 on the road in the current 2-3-2 format have won 24 out of the 27 times.

The last time a team came back from 2-0 down in a best-of-seven series was the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2023. They came back and defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2023 NLCS and advanced to the World Series, where they lost against the Texas Rangers.

However, the last time a team came back to win after losing the first two games at home was in 1996. The Yankees fell 2-0 down in the World Series against the Atlanta Braves, but then won 4 straight to claim their 23rd World Series championship.

So, the Blue Jays do have a chance. A loss in Game 3 would then mean that they will need to pull off a 2004 Boston Red Sox-type comeback if they want to reach the World Series. Game 3 will be played on Wednesday night at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
