In October 2025, when the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays battled it out in the World Series, pitcher Alex Vesia and his wife, Kayla, suffered the tragic loss of their newborn child. On Friday, he broke his silence and spoke for the first time and expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported them during this dark time.
It was in April last year when Vesia and his wife announced that they were expecting their first child. On October 23rd, a day before the World Series, the Dodgers revealed that the relief pitcher would leave the team due to a “deeply personal family matter.”
The Dodgers would not provide any more details. They also did not place any expectation on his return.
In Game 3 of the World Series at Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers’ relievers would honor their teammate. They would wear No.51 caps, the number Vesia wears.
The Blue Jays relievers would do the same and show off their solidarity by wearing No.51 caps in Game 6 at Rogers Centre.
Blue Jays relievers had “51” on their caps in Game 6 as a tribute to Alex Vesia from the Dodgers, who’s dealing with a personal matter.

Four months after this heartbreaking loss, the pitcher opened up about it. In a 6-minute prepared message, the 29-year-old thanked everyone who came forward and supported them.
I will start off by thanking the Dodgers, Andrew Friedman, Brandon Gomes, Doc, the whole coaching staff and all of my teammates… We are beyond grateful for what this organization has given us and has been for our family… I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the Toronto Blue Jays, their front office, coaching staff and players for showing us the support… We were super overwhelmed with emotion and the baseball community, the relationships we make along the way, it showed that it’s much bigger than baseball.

In November, a day before Vesia announced the passing of his child, the Dodgers made a huge move regarding him. After picking up the $10 million club option for Max Muncy, the team did the same for Vesia.
The LA-based side picked up his $3.55 million club option and brought him back for the 2026 season.
