Alexander Bublik has mentioned a notable player among the favorites to win this year’s Wimbledon Championships. The Kazakhstan star revealed that Jannik Sinner is the standout player to win the title on grass and omitted Novak Djokovic, despite the Serbian legend’s brilliant record at the tournament.
Djokovic has been the player to beat at Wimbledon over the past three seasons. In fact, any player who has beaten Djokovic has won the championship since 2023. The former World No.1 has won Wimbledon seven times in his career; only Roger Federer has more titles at the tournament than him (8).
Djokovic has reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon since 2021. Meanwhile, Sinner had never reached the final of the tournament until last year. Before that, he had reached the semi-finals just once, losing to Djokovic.
However, last year, the Italian star claimed the Wimbledon title for the first time in his career after beating two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz in four sets. He’s yet to win a Grand Slam this season, but he’s the favorite to defend the championship, having performed in an extraordinary fashion from March to May on tour.
Also, Djokovic has won 24 Grand Slams, seven of them coming at Wimbledon. Despite being 39, he remains one of those players who always stand out when competing at the All England Club. During Bublik’s media interview at SW19 on Monday (July 6), he argued that Sinner is the best player at the tournament and that Taylor Fritz is the best player he has faced on the grass court:
There is only one player who is above the rest here, and that is Jannik Sinner. Apart from him, I think everyone is fairly evenly matched. Taylor is undoubtedly one of the most dangerous players on grass that I have faced. He played very solid, made very few errors, and didn’t give me many chances. He was clearly better than me. It’s another match to learn from. The next time we face off on grass, I’ll have to be a better version of myself.
Bublik is true in some way, as he has never faced Djokovic on grass. He has faced the 39-year-old on the hard courts on just one occasion. However, Fritz has yet to win a Grand Slam on tour in his career. The American star often finds joy competing on the grass court and won two titles on the surface last year.
Taylor Fritz beats Alexander Bublik to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals
Taylor Fritz earned his place in the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon Championships after beating Alexander Bublik on Monday (July 7). The American star has now reached the last eight for the fourth time in five years. The former World No.4 suffered an injury that made him miss most of the clay season, but he has now found his rhythm on grass.

Just like last year, he reached the final of the Stuttgart Open and the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. However, last year, he won Stuttgart and Eastbourne. He defeated Bublik 7-6(1), 6-4, 6-4 after an hour and 42 minutes on the court. After the triumph, he admitted that he took his chances during the match against the 10th seed:
When I got my opportunities to break, I took them, and when he got in some service games, had some looks in some scary moments. I played really well to get myself out of those situations. When you have two guys serving big and short points, it is going to come down to key moments in the match and I thought I played them really well.
Fritz has won 11 of his 13 matches on grass this season, reaching the final in Stuttgart and the Terra Wortmann Open. He will be aiming to reach the semi-finals of the tournament when he faces the winner between Alexander Zverev and Jiri Lehecka. He leads Zverev 10-5 in their head-to-head record on tour.
