In Short
  • Alexander Bublik rejected a marriage proposal from a fan during the Geneva Open, responding with "Never."
  • He explained his rejection by stating he is already married and has a son.
  • Bublik is preparing for the upcoming French Open after his quarterfinal victory in Geneva.

The French Open is around the corner. And while the majority of the top players have already arrived in Paris and started their preparation, Alexander Bublik is currently playing at the Geneva Open.

After knocking out Edas Butvilas in his opening-round match, Bublik went on to overcome a set deficit to defeat Arthur Rinderknech 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. The tense quarterfinal match saw a lighthearted moment when Bublik, while he was preparing to serve, received a marriage proposal from a fan. “Bublik, will you marry me?” yelled the fan.

The Kazakh ace broke into a wide smile and looked toward the fan, yelling, “Never”, before blowing a kiss toward her amidst the laughter of the crowd.

Later during the on-court interview, Bublik gave a simple reason why he had to reject the marriage proposal, saying, “Well, I’m married already, so I can’t get married twice, I guess.” Bublik tied the knot with Tatiyana Bublik in 2021, and their first child, a son named Vasily, was born in 2022.

The win helped Bublik tie his head-to-head record over Rinderknech to 2-2. Bublik will next be locking horns with Learner Tien. This will be their second career meeting after their clash in the third round of this year’s Italian Open, which the American won in straight sets. Before scheduling his match against Bublik, Tien defeated Alex Michelsen in straight sets.

Alexander Bublik recalls dropping out of the top 80

In March last year, Alexander Bublik dropped out of the top 80 (ranked 82), marking the first time in seven years he had fallen out of the top 80. Bublik started playing on the Challenger Tour, and slowly, he started regaining his form.

At the Halle Open, he knocked out defending champion Jannik Sinner in the second round and went on to defeat Daniil Medvedev in the final to win his second ATP 500 title. Bublik next lifted the Swiss Open Gstaad against Juan Manuel Cerundolo before defeating Arthur Cazaux in the Austrian Open Kitzbuhel. He won his fourth title at the Hangzhou Open against Valentin Royer.

He has already lifted one title this year. Back in January, he defeated Lorenzo Musetti in the Hong Kong Open final. The win helped Bublik reach a career-best Np. 10 on the rankings table.

No one wants to be 80 in the world. It’s a little step in my career. I’ve never been there. I guess I was out of the top 50 for the first time in seven years. So for me, it was a hit.

Alexander Bublik said during his interview with The Guardian

In the same interview, Bublik admitted that money was the driving factor for him when he turned professional. But his mindset has now changed.

I think you realise quickly, once you start making your first money playing tennis, that it’s a big business. It’s nice to win trophies, it’s nice to be playing in a beautiful arena, it’s all nice, but at the end of the day, you got to pay yourself, and I think that was the very first motivation I had when I became a professional.

Alexander Bublik added

After the Geneva Open, Bublik will be playing the French Open, the main draw of which is set to start on May 24th. The French Open is the only Grand Slam event where Bublik has reached the quarterfinals. He reached the stage last year, losing in straight sets to eventual runner-up Jannik Sinner, who this year will be aiming to become the seventh man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam.

Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will not be competing in Paris because of a wrist injury he suffered during the Barcelona Open. The seven-time Major champion will also be skipping Wimbledon.
