Alexander Zverev arrives in Miami after an early exit from the Indian Wells Masters. The World No.2 was seeking to close the gap between him and No.1 Jannik Sinner but failed to do so in the California desert. He now bids to turn things around and regain his form at the Miami Open in Florida.

The German has had one of the most difficult five weeks of his career. After a runners-up finish at the Australian Open, he was hoping to keep the momentum in the South American swing but that has failed to materialize. The World No.2 earned a 4-3 win-loss record at the Rio Open, Argentina Open and in Acapulco.

In Indian Wells, he was seeking to bounce back pretty quickly and will for his first title of the season. However, he was stunned and outplayed by the Dutch Tallon Griekspoor in the second round. He now hopes to find a personal connection in Miami and then bounce back to winning form.

During his press day at the ATP 1000 tournament, he revealed that he understands the court better than Indian Wells. He added that despite not being at his best for weeks now, he aims to play some good tennis again.

I genuinely love spending time here. The conditions are just probably more suited for me [than Indian Wells]. The courts are a lot faster. It’s more humid, so the ball stops through the air maybe a bit more than in the desert. But we’ll see. I [have not been] playing my best the past few weeks. I started the season well in Australia, not playing my best now for a few weeks, but I hope I can turn it around here and show some good tennis again.

Zverev will take on Benjamin Bonzi or a qualifier in his opening match at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. He has an amazing 17-9 record in the tournament, a tally which includes his championship win in 2018.

Alexander Zverev aims to take his progress match by match after Indian Wells defeat

Alexander Zverev understands that his bad form will have to take time before making progress. The German star has lost to only players outside the Top 20 since losing to Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open. In Miami, he aims to take the process of returning back to winning ways match by match.

Here I really want to go match by match and try to win every single match that I play. I hope I can show that on court, I had some very good training sessions here, so I remember the feeling of how I played last year a little bit as well. So again, I’m just trying to show that on court in a match.

Zverev reached the semifinals of the Miami Open last year before losing to runners-up Grigor Dimitrov. He will hope to defend the points this time around and perhaps get past that stage.

Alexander Zverev to face a tough draw in Miami as Jack Draper falls into his half

As aforementioned Alexander Zverev will open his campaign against Benjamin Bonzi or a qualifier in the second round. He will hope to beat Bonzi before possibly facing either Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard or Marcos Giron in the third round. After that, he will likely play Frances Tiafoe or Arthur Fils.

In the quarterfinals, he will likely face Jack Draper, who is in the top half of the Miami draw. The British star defeated Holger Rune to win his first Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells. He has been in form of late and has only lost two matches this season. If Zverev does meet Draper, it will be their first-ever meeting in the ATP Tour.
