German tennis ace Alexander Zverev was not very gracious in his defeat to Taylor Fritz in the fourth round at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. He first complained to the American about the people in his box celebrating too much, and later did not credit his good tennis for the result. Instead, he blamed it on his injured knee.
After the match, Zverev was asked about the level of his opponent and how he played. The German ace said that while he respects Fritz for coming back from two sets down, he talked about his injured knee and attributed his defeat to his struggles.
Zverev claimed that he was playing on one leg and said it was difficult for him to move freely. He also pointed out that there were no long rallies and the match was not physically draining.
I think it was pretty obvious that I wasn’t 100% today. I didn’t move very well the whole match. When I was trying to run to recover a drop shot, I was limping more than running...First of all, I have a lot of respect because he managed to come back from two sets down. It's never easy. Today I was playing on one leg and as I said, I didn't play at my best level, there were no long rallies and it wasn't a tough match physically.Alexander Zverev said after his defeat to Taylor Fritz
During the match, Zverev was wearing a gray knee sleeve on his left knee after overextending it during his third-round win against Cameron Norrie.
Alexander Zverev reveals the problem with his knee
After attributing his defeat to the injured knee, Alexander Zverev went on to talk about the issue in detail. The World No. 4 said that he sustained the injury when he suffered a fall during his third-round match against Cameron Norrie.
Zverev revealed that he had torn his knee capsule and also had bone edema. However, he assured everyone that it would heal naturally and he wouldn’t need to undergo surgery to address the issue.
I know what it is because I had an X-ray yesterday. I have a bone edema in my knee and I also have a torn knee capsule. It was caused by the fall in the match against Norrie. It's nothing that needs surgery, it will heal on its own. But it's quite painful now.Alexander Zverev said about his knee injury (H/T: Ubitennis)
The German also claimed that even though he wasn’t able to walk properly, he chose to play the match against Taylor Fritz because he did not want to retire. Zverev said that he was counting on his good form at Wimbledon to take him through the contest.
