Carlos Alcaraz was last seen in action at the US Open. The Spaniard, who played his first tournament since the Barcelona Open, lost a five-set thriller to Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals. Alexander Zverev later beat Shelton in the final and won his second Grand Slam title.

Zverev next competed in Germany’s Davis Cup Qualifiers tie against Croatia. He won both singles matches he played against Matej Dodig and Dino Prizmic, helping his team win 3-1. Zverev next flew to London for the Laver Cup, which will run from September 25 to September 27. Alcaraz is also in London for the same reason, and both will represent Team Europe. They have already met and conversed about the US Open.

Alcaraz asked him what he was thinking at that moment, on match point at 5-2 in the fourth set against Shelton. Zverev was so focused that he had no idea what the score was. He looked at the scoreline and toward his team, and then he realized he had won the match.

So when Alcaraz asked him this: “Tell me what you were thinking… I was watching it at home and couldn’t believe it,” Zverev responded with: “Completely nothing in my head. That’s what helps, you know? When you’re stupid, it helps.“

Alcaraz laughed and disagreed. But he agreed that not knowing the score during the last game does help.

I thought we were up 4-1, that’s why I wasn’t nervous at all. If it had been 5-2, I definitely would’ve gotten really nervous!

Alexander Zverev responded

It was Zverev’s second title of the season in his fourth final. Before the US Open, he won the French Open by overcoming Flavio Cobolli in five sets. He lost the Madrid Open and the Wimbledon final to World No.1 Jannik Sinner. Zverev has a great opportunity to reach his career-best ranking of No.1 as he is only 1,810 points behind Sinner.

After the Laver Cup, Zverev will compete at the China Open, while Alcaraz will be in Tokyo for the Japan Open. He beat Taylor Fritz in the final last year.

David Ferrer reacts to Alexander Zverev’s Grand Slam wins

David Ferrer coached Alexander Zverev for six months in 2020. Ferrer, who is also the Davis Cup captain, was asked during his interview with CLAY what clicked for Zverev this season that helped him win two Majors.

I think Sascha has always been there. The problem was that he had two players — Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner — who would not let him win Grand Slams. Now he has managed it, but he has always been right there.

Zverev lost the 2024 French Open final to Alcaraz, and broke down in tears when he lost in straight sets to Sinner in the 2025 Australian Open final. At this year’s Australian Open, Alcaraz ended his run in the semifinals.

He is a very competitive, winning player and he has taken his opportunity. Sascha had already won very important tournaments — Masters 1000s, the Tour Finals — and had reached Grand Slam finals. I think his time had come, he was ready, and he made the most of it. I have never had any doubts, because he is a player who rises to the big moments — he always has been.

David Ferrer added

Zverev trails Sinner 4-11 in their head-to-head meetings. While against Alcaraz, he trails 6-7. Sinner will not be playing at the Laver Cup. Instead, he is gearing up for the China Open, which starts on September 30. The five-time Grand Slam champion beat Learner Tien in the final last year.
