Alexander Zverev continued his disappointing start to the 2025 season with yet another early exit, this time at Monte Carlo. The German has not won any ATP titles so far this season and has failed to recapture the form that saw him reach the Australian Open final earlier this year.

Zverev appeared frustrated in the post-match press conference, questioning his ability and form just a month before Roland Garros. The German emphasized his struggles in closing out matches when pushed to final sets recently.

I have no idea what’s happening to me right now. I have been trying to understand it for several months, but I don’t even know what to say anymore. I don’t know. All I know is that I’m losing matches, nothing more. If I were to win two or three matches this way, fighting so hard, there wouldn’t be as many questions, but I lost in three sets in Buenos Aires, in three sets in Rio, in three sets in Indian Wells, in three sets in Miami, and in three sets here. I haven’t won a single one, and that’s what matters.

Alexander Zverev said in his post-match interview

Last year, Zverev was one of the best players in the world on clay. He won the Rome Masters and followed it up by reaching his second Grand Slam final at Roland Garros.

However, this year, he has not been able to maintain that level. In fact, his poor form on clay, according to his own words, is the worst since he suffered a career-threatening foot injury during the 2022 Roland Garros semifinal.

Berrettini has been in great form on clay. He has now won 17 of his last 18 matches on the surface. Last year, he claimed titles in Marrakech, Gstaad, and Kitzbuhel. He also beat Mariano Navone in his opening match in Monte-Carlo.

Up next, Berrettini will face either Jiri Lehecka or fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti. Musetti was the last Italian before Berrettini to beat a top-2 player on clay when he defeated Djokovic in Monte Carlo in 2023.

Zverev, on the other hand, continues to struggle on clay. He lost in the quarter-finals in both Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro earlier this year. The 27-year-old will now aim to bounce back at the ATP 500 tournament in Munich, his home event.
