Alexander Zverev was spotted working with Rafael Nadal‘s former coach Toni Nadal at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca. This has sparked rumors of a possible partnership between the two. Zverev has not produced consistent performances this year. Though he reached his third Grand Slam final at the Australian Open, in the next six tournaments, he failed to win more than two consecutive matches.

He ended his trophy drought at the BMW Open a few tournaments later, and his French Open run ended in the quarterfinals due to his four-set defeat to 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. Zverev then started his grass-court campaign at the Boss Open in his bid to win his first title on the surface but he registered his fifth consecutive defeat to Taylor Fritz, who improved his head-to-head record over the German ace to 8-5.

Though Zverev next reached the semifinal of the Halle Open, at Wimbledon, he suffered a shocking first-round exit. Arthur Rinderknech eliminated the three-time Grand Slam finalist in five sets. Following his exit, he opened up about his mental health struggles, saying he couldn’t find joy in his life since his Australian Open defeat to World No.1 Jannik Sinner.

Many think Zverev needs to change his coaching team as the World No.3 is currently coached by his father Alexander Zverev Sr. and it seems Zverev has finally decided to add an outside coach and it’s none other than Nadal’s uncle Toni.

Here’s the video:

Zverev has worked with Carlos Alcaraz‘s current coach Juan Carlos Ferrero after which, Ivan Lendl joined his team. Later, he added David Ferrer to his team. His partnerships with these coaches did not last for a long time.

Zverev is expected to make his return to tennis at the Canadian Open, the first Masters 1000 event on the North American hard-court swing. The 28-year-old lifted the title in 2017 by beating Roger Federer. Last year, he lost in the quarterfinal to Sebastian Korda.

Alexander Zverev still the No.3 player despite first-round exit at Wimbledon

In spite of his first-round defeat in the grass-court Major, Zverev will continue to occupy the third position on the rankings table. At present, he has 6,310 points, while World No.4 Taylor Fritz, the semifinalist at Wimbledon, has 5,035.

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz will continue to sit on the first and second spots in the rankings table. Sinner, the winner of two Grand Slam titles this season, plus the finalist at the Italian Open and the French Open, has 12,030 points. Alcaraz, the finalist of seven tournaments this season and the winner of five titles, has 8,600 points.

Next Major is the US Open. Zverev was the finalist in 2020. He was on the verge of winning as he had won the first two sets but he couldn’t capitalize on his lead and ended up losing the match to Dominic Thiem. Last year at Flushing Meadows, Zverev suffered a shocking defeat to Alexandre Muller in the second round.
