The one thing that Alexander Zverev desires the most at this stage of his tennis career is a Grand Slam title. Thrice he has reached the final, but ended up losing all.

He played the first final at the 2020 US Open. Despite leading 2-0, he ended up losing the match in five sets to Dominic Them. Last year, Zverev couldn’t overcome Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final.

But he once again got the chance- this time, at the Australian Open this year. He was, however, no match for World No.1 Jannik Sinner. After the heartbreak, Sascha ended up losing his next six tournaments without winning more than two consecutive matches.

He ended his title drought at the BMW Open, beating Ben Shelton without breaking a sweat. At the French Open, however, 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic ended his campaign in the quarterfinals.

Zverev was successful in adapting to the grass swing right after the gruelling clay season. He made it to the final of the Stuttgart Open, only to lose the match to Taylor Fritz, registering his fifth consecutive defeat to the American ace. After losing in the semifinal of the Halle Open, the 28-year-old suffered a shock opening-round exit at Wimbledon.

Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech knocked him out in five sets. Following his exit, Zverev made a concerning confession about his mental health, saying he couldn’t find joy in his life. The World No.3, however, is still determined to work toward his Grand Slam goal.

I feel like I have a long, successful career, right? The Slam is still missing, but I do believe that I am going to have both. I very strongly believe that.

Alexander Zverev said during an interview with digital creator Gareth Richman

Zverev will next be playing the Canadian Open, where last year, Sebastian Korda eliminated him in the quarterfinals. At the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open, Zverev lost to Fritz in the quarterfinals and Sinner in the semifinals, respectively.

Boris Becker has one question about a potential Alexander Zverev-Toni Nadal coaching partnership

Following his Wimbledon exit, Alexander Zverev trained at Rafael Nadal‘s Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca with the 22-time Grand Slam champion’s former coach and uncle Toni Nadal. Zverev is expected to reveal whether he indeed has hired Toni as his coach in his pre-match press conference at the Canadian Open.

Boris Becker, who wanted Zverev to make some changes to his coaching team, said he backed his compatriot’s decision if the rumor is indeed true. Becker, however, has one question regarding Zverev’s coaching: whether he would still be working with his father, Alexander Zverev Sr., and his brother Mischa Zverev.

My question is, what does his father do? What does his brother do? Do they still play an active role in his tennis life? What does the box look like in Canada? What does the box look like at the US Open? I don’t think Toni likes to be interfered with in his training methods, in his strategic decisions, even though his father has a great understanding of tennis, so does his brother.

Boris Becker said on his Becker Petkovic podcast

Zverev was scheduled to play the Gstaad Open- an ATP 250 event on clay. But he withdrew from the tournament.

Zverev has lifted both the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters. Back in 2017, he lifted the Montreal trophy by upsetting 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer. The Cincinnati title he won in 2021 by beating Andrey Rublev.

Despite his first-round exit at Wimbledon, Zverev continued to sit in the third spot in the rankings table. World No.4 Taylor Fritz won’t be able to remove him if he doesn’t win at least one Masters 1000 title.
