Alexander Zverev has decided to take the responsibility of leading Team Europe at the 2025 Laver Cup in San Francisco. The German star is currently the oldest participant in the tournament. He has been a part of the team since the inception of the tournament in 2017 in Prague.
He played alongside Roger Federer and subsequently with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. However, he’s been mentored by Federer and Nadal at the tournament on numerous occasions and he’s now a strong voice in Team Europe. He played a major role in the team’s triumph in Berlin last year.
He had to beat Frances Tiafoe in the third singles of the 2024 Laver Cup, which set Carlos Alcaraz a good platform to beat Taylor Fritz and seal the victory for Team Europe. This year, he will be joined by Alcaraz again, Tomas Machac, and Casper Ruud, while debutants Jakub Mensik, Holger Rune, and Flavio Cobolli complete the team.
During his interview with the Laver Cup, Zverev was asked how he had worked with Team Europe’s debutants. The World No.3 revealed that he looks forward to guiding them throughout the tournament:
We have a lot of new guys, a lot of fresh faces. Hopefully, I can guide them a little bit towards what the Laver Cup actually means. And the emotions that they’re going to feel on the court.
Zverev is expected to play a major role in Team Europe’s bid to win the Laver Cup for the second consecutive year. But he will also rely on Alcaraz’s skills, experience, and form at San Francisco. Zverev added that the key to Team Europe’s success at the event will be in the doubles category:
Success is key, especially in doubles. Me, Casper and Carlos kind of talked already, what it can look like. I feel like there’s one team that really sticks out for Team Europe, who should definitely play together.
Last year, Team Europe entered the final day of the competition trailing 4-8, where they won just one of the four matches. Also, they struggled in doubles matches and needed Zverev and Alcaraz to bail them out. They will be hoping that the same scenario doesn’t play out in San Francisco.
Alexander Zverev looks forward to enjoying a fun week with his teammate at the Laver Cup
Most of the players in Team Europe have competed against each other on the court on several occasions on tour. For instance, Alexander Zverev and World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz hold a 6-6 head-to-head record on tour and have met once this season. But at the Laver Cup, they will have to put their rivalries aside as they seek to win the title.

Zverev revealed during the aforementioned interview, that every player in Team Europe will come together to work hard to win the competition. The Australian Open finalist added that he looks forward to having fun at the event:
When do you ever get the opportunity to be world number three, number two, world number one is with you giving advice? That doesn’t happen because normally you want to beat those guys. But now, they’re teammates. So, it is very special as I said, it’s a very different atmosphere that in other tournaments. It’s one of the most fun weeks and I think everybody will enjoy it.
Zverev has not been in his best form this season, especially in Grand Slam events. His best major tournament run was at the Australian Open, where he reached the final before losing to Jannik Sinner in straight sets. He also reached the quarter-finals of the Roland Garros, where he fell to Novak Djokovic.
