Alexander Zverev opted for an out-of-court settlement with his ex-girlfriend, who accused the German player of domestic abuse. Their daughter, Mayla, who was born in 2021, was one of the reasons why they decided to take this step.

Zverev’s ex-girlfriend, Brenda Patea, alleged that the tennis player strangled her in an apartment building in 2020. The trial opened on May 31 during Zverev’s Roland Garros campaign.

Alexander Zverev has agreed to this discontinuation via his defense lawyer, solely in order to shorten the proceedings, above all in the interests of their child. Alexander Zverev is considered innocent.
Alexander Zverev’s media lawyers said

One of Zverev’s lawyers, Katharina Dierlamm, revealed that Zverev and his ex-girlfriend want their daughter to grow up without conflict. Zverev’s ex-girlfriend’s lawyers also did not want the trial to drag on for months.

We applied for a settlement. The daughter was really suffering. So now they can both look to the future and get on with their lives. We ended this deal with [the feeling] that people should stop throwing things at each other.

The public and media were not allowed into the court to hear the testimony of the ex-girlfriend after Zverev’s lawyers’ requests.

How did Alexander Zverev react to the trial?

Alexander Zverev will be playing his semifinal at the Roland Garros against Casper Ruud on June 7 and has not reacted to questions about the settlement yet. Before the start of the Roland Garros, when he was asked at the press conference about the trial, he said his focus would be on tennis, and that he had full faith in the legal proceedings. When the trial opened, Zverev preferred to keep mum about it.

Notably, the ATP has no rules regarding domestic violence due to which it had to face criticism from fans as well as tennis players.

Andy Murray has time and again urged the tennis body to make some changes to its policies, while Sloane Stephens pointed out how the WTA Tour would not have allowed a player facing those allegations to compete in tournaments. World No.1 player Iga Swiatek did not like the ATP’s decision to make Zverev a member of the ATP Player Advisory Council at a time when he was facing those charges.
