Zverev irked by German Media for no show despite Madrid Masters triumph

World No.6 Alexander Zverev won his second Madrid Masters title on Sunday by defeating World No.9 Matteo Berrettini in three entertaining sets. The German had beaten Dan Evans, Kei Nishikori, Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem on his way to his fourth Masters 1000 title in the Spanish capital.

Zverev will now turn his attention towards the Rome Masters this week, where he will take on either Adrian Mannarino or Hugo Dellien in the round of 32 on Wednesday.

As the 24-year-old got engaged giving his post-match interview, he realized that there wasn’t any interest shown from the German Media. In fact, Zverev has often criticized them for talking about him despite his decent performances in the recent past.

“None? I just won a Masters and there’s none in German? As you see, the Germans really don’t care, a disappointed,” Zverev opined.

During the presentation ceremony, the 24-year-old even poked fun at the current ATP player and Madrid Masters tournament director, Feliciano Lopez.

“Thank you Feli. For some reason, after I beat Rafa, you don’t talk to me one more word, I don’t know why,” Zverev laughed. “I think maybe this will change after the final. I think both of you are doing an incredible job.”

The Madrid Masters champion also opened up on how he felt good to speak in front of the crowd at Caja Magica, after all the empty stands lately due to the ongoing pandemic. After his win over Nadal in the quarterfinals, Zverev also joined an elite club. He became one of the few players to defeat Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic on their favorite surfaces—Clay, Grass and Hard court respectively.
