German tennis star Alexander Zverev enjoyed an extremely consistent 2024 season with many highs and peak performances. However, there were multiple missed opportunities in his quest for a first Grand Slam title.

According to Zverev, the defeat that left him with a ‘bitter taste’ was at Wimbledon 2024. The two-time ATP Finals champion lost in the Round of 16 to Taylor Fritz at SW19 despite holding a two-set lead.

I still think I played my best tennis at Wimbledon this year, for the first time in my career. I’ve never played as well on grass as I did before my injury. It was very, very bitter for me because for the first time in my life I really saw the opportunities on grass.

The loss to Fritz at Wimbledon was one of several clear chances Zverev had to end his long wait for a Grand Slam title. At the Australian Open in January, he squandered a two-set lead against Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.

At Roland Garros, he held a two-sets-to-one lead against Alcaraz in the final but ultimately lost. At the US Open, with Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic eliminated in earlier rounds, he had a golden opportunity to reach the final but stumbled against Fritz once again.

Usually, if a player doesn’t win a Grand Slam in a season, he or she struggles to finish in the top 5 of the rankings. However, for Alexander Zverev, 2024 was an extremely consistent yet peculiar season.

Despite not winning any Grand Slams, the German finished second in the ATP rankings. Surprisingly, he was ahead of Carlos Alcaraz in this category, even though the Spaniard won two Grand Slam titles in 2024. This highlighted Zverev’s remarkable consistency throughout the season.

In 2024, Zverev won two Masters 1000 titles, reached a Grand Slam final, and made it to the semifinals of the ATP Finals. The two Masters 1000 titles came in Rome and Paris. With these victories, he became the only player to win Masters 1000 titles on two different surfaces during the season.

Zverev lost the Roland Garros final to Alcaraz in June. The 2021 Olympic Gold medalist had a two-sets-to-one lead in the decisive match but squandered it to settle for his second Grand Slam runner-up finish.
