Alexander Zverev survived a scare at the 2026 Australian Open as he lost the first set against Gabriel Diallo in the first round, which was held on Sunday (January 18). But the third seed turned the tables completely in his favor after winning the second set, eventually securing a spot in the second round with a 6-7(1), 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 scoreline.
After the win, Zverev, who finished the 2025 Australian Open as the runner-up, received a marriage proposal from a spectator at the Rod Laver Arena. Zverev spotted a man who held a sign that read, “Marry me, Sascha“. The German took his time to respond before asking to give him the ring for that finger, to which the man blew kisses, while the crowd laughed, enjoying the interaction.
Where’s the ring, man? I am believing myself. I still want a ring otherwise… I am not that cheap… No, we are incapable of doing one on-court interview, which is just normal, are we?

Zverev was greatly disappointed after his final defeat here last year as he was no match for World No.2 Jannik Sinner, who defended his crown with a straight-set win. The third seed, also the winner of 24 singles titles, has lost three Grand Slam finals, as apart from last year’s Australian Open, he suffered five-set defeats at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz and Dominic Thiem in the finals of the 2024 Roland Garros and 2020 US Open, respectively.

Alexander Zverev on his match against Gabriel Diallo
Alexander Zverev booked the spot in the second round of the Australian Open for the 10th consecutive time. Zverev admitted after his match that initially it was tough for him to “find a rhythm” as Gabriel Diallo was unbelievably aggressive.

Yeah, he’s a great player, very young, very talented, very powerful in the beginning. I was not playing good. You know, I was giving him too many chances, I was too defensive. But the normal stuff that I do in the first round of a Grand Slam sometimes, so…happy the way I played the second, third, and fourth because I thought that was quite high level for me, and yeah, happy to get the win.

The 28-year-old did not feature in any warm-up singles tournaments before arriving in Melbourne. But he represented Germany in the United Cup, where his team failed to book a quarterfinal spot after their win over the Netherlands and a defeat to eventual winners Poland in the round robin stage.
Zverev defeated Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor and lost to Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz. At the press conference, the three-time Grand Slam finalist was then asked about his preparations for the Australian Open.
Yeah, I would have liked to play more matches at the United Cup for sure. But we lost to Poland, who eventually won. So, yeah, that was it for us. But yeah, the preparation…actually in practice was quite good. I had good practice sessions. I had a lot of them and a lot of time here in Melbourne. Of course, I would have loved to play a few more matches, but it is how it is. We won the tournament two years ago; this time, we lost in the group stages. It’s just how it goes sometimes.

It was the pair’s first head-to-head meeting. The 24-year-old has never made it past the third round of a Major, reaching the stage at the 2024 US Open. In last year’s Australian Open, his campaign ended in the second round. Diallo, in fact, lost all his Grand Slam matches in the second round in the 2025 season.
