Alexander Zverev will be kick-starting his campaign on the North American hard-court swing at the Canadian Open. He recently gave an interview to digital creator Gareth Richman, who asked him about a dream player he wants to join forces with for doubles.

Zverev has played the Big 3 of tennis- Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. He has also played doubles with Federer, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, and Juan Martin Del Potro.

But his dream doubles partner is from the ATP tour. It’s the legendary Steffi Graf, his compatriot, who lifted 22 Grand Slam singles titles in a career that spanned less than two decades.

I played against and with Roger Federer. I played doubles with him and singles against him. That was the dream when I was growing up, for sure. It was surreal when I played doubles with him. I would love to play with Steffi Graf. It would have been so much fun. She’s an absolute hero, an absolute legend. I would have loved that experience to play against her or with her.

The aforementioned players have lifted at least one Grand Slam title. Zverev, however, hasn’t yet won a Major. The 28-year-old has played three Grand Slam finals, including in this year’s Australian Open, where he was no match for World No.1 Jannik Sinner, losing in straight sets.

At the French Open this year, the World No.3 couldn’t overcome 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals, losing the match in four sets. At Wimbledon, he suffered a shock first-round defeat as unseeded Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech knocked him out in five sets.

Zverev has captured just one trophy this season. He breezed past Ben Shelton to win the BMW Open. But before playing his home tournament, Zverev lost six consecutive tournaments without winning more than two consecutive matches.

Boris Becker makes his feelings known on Alexander Zverev-Toni Nadal coaching rumors

Alexander Zverev, after his Wimbledon exit, was spotted training with Rafael Nadal’s uncle and former coach Toni Nadal at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca. This obviously sparked coaching rumors, and Boris Becker is nothing but excited for the partnership, as he is convinced it will bring great results.

I’ll give it a thumbs up if it’s true; both of them have to confirm it first. But if it’s true that Toni Nadal is Alexander Zverev’s new coach, then he’s done everything right. He [Nadal] knows how to win Grand Slams. He’s won every Grand Slam as a coach, he is a seasoned pro. And if Rafa comes along as a mentor from time to time and tells Sasca something, Zverev has to listen and believe him.

Boris Becker said on the Becker Petkovic podcast

Becker had previously criticized Zverev’s approach and wanted him to change his coaching team. Zverev is currently being coached by his father, Alexander Zverev Sr., and his brother Mischa Zverev.

At the US Open, Zverev will continue his hunt for his first Grand Slam title. He had come close to winning the title in 2020 as he made it to a Major final for the first time in his career. But Zverev squandered a two-set lead to Dominic Thiem.

Last year at Flushing Meadows, he lost in the quarterfinal to eventual runner-up Taylor Fritz. This season, apart from the BMW Open, Zverev had also reached the Stuttgart Open final but ended up losing the match to Fritz, registering his fifth consecutive defeat to the American ace.

Zverev also couldn’t reach the final of the other two North American events last year. Sebastian Korda knocked him out in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open, while at the Cincinnati Masters, eventual winner Jannik Sinner defeated him in the semifinals.
