Alexander Zverev has been in good form in the Acapulco open 2021. He overcame Carlos Alcaraz Garfia and Laslo Đere in the first and second round of the tournament. In the third he got a walkover from Norwegian Casper Ruud, who hurt his wrist. In the Semifinal he came face to face with fellow German Dominik Koepfer.

Koepfer himself was in good form as well, as he demonstrated with a straight sets victory against Milos Raonic. But in the Semifinal contest that lasted two sets, Koepfer was beaten by Zverev 6-4 7-6.

At the start of the second set during the Zverev vs Koepfer encounter, the players halted play for a moment, after the point, as they felt the tremors of a mini earthquake. Koepfer clearly left it first and went up to the chair umpire. Zverev, who also understood what was going on, started chatting with the ball kids, possibly about the same thing.

After the match Zverev said that during the point as they were running around they didn’t feel anything. But Zverev added that he has witnessed this before at Acapulco and it’s a common occurrence here. Zverev said,  “We were running around the court, so we had to play a point during the earthquake. We didn’t feel much, but still obviously I know it happens here in Acapulco. I’ve witnessed it here before, so I guess it’s normal.”

The match was won by Zverev and he moved into the Finals of the Acapulco Open. In the other Semifinals, Tsitsipas overcame the challenges of the nineteen year old Italian Lorenzo Musetti. The first seed Tsitsipas won in straight sets, 6-1 6-3. The lineup for the final is, first seed Stefanos Tsitsipas vs the second seed Alexander Zverev
