Alexander Zverev‘s frustrations knew no bounds when he found himself at the receiving end of Hubert Hurkacz‘s “f*****g crazy” serves during Group F’s Germany versus Poland match in the ongoing United Cup. On the back of powerful performances, Poland achieved a clean sweep of their opponents.

Hurkacz missed the majority of the 2025 season and is competing in his first tournament since June last year because of injury issues. Zverev, who finished last year in the No.3 ranking spot, was no match for the Pole, losing with a 6-3, 6-4 scoreline in an hour and 24 minutes.

Hurkacz, a World No.83 now, fired 21 aces. Frustrations got the better of the three-time Grand Slam finalist, who, while wiping his face on the towel during a changeover, expressed his vexation to his father, Alexander Zverev Sr.

Why am I not serving? No, he hasn’t played in two f*****g years, and he comes out serving at 230 km/h… In the evening, when it’s cold, f***. It’s f*****g crazy. The guy can barely f*****g walk, and he’s serving.

Not just this, at one point, Zverev even flung his racket in anger and destroyed it after failing to return a shot.

After Hurkacz’s win, it was time for Iga Swiatek to give Poland an unassailable lead. She came from a set down to down Eva Lys 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Later, the pair of Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski secured a 7-6(6), 6-3 win over Laura Siegemund and Zverev.

Poland, who finished the last United Cup as runners-up, will next be facing the Netherlands. Germany, in their first match, clinched a 3-0 win over the Dutch players.

Alexander Zverev is proud of his 2025 season

Alexander Zverev dealt with ups and downs in the 2025 season as he reached a Grand Slam final as well as suffered early-round exits. Earlier in 2025, Sascha played his career’s third Major final at the Australian Open but was no match for Jannik Sinner, who secured the win in straight sets.

Zverev then struggled to make deep runs in the next few events he played. He made his second final of the season at the Munich Open, wrapping it up in his favor by going past Ben Shelton. Taylor Fritz and Sinner were the reasons why Zverev failed to win the Stuttgart Open and the Vienna Open, respectively. But Zverev, despite his performances, was proud of his 2025 season.

I had issues. I had issues with my body. I had injuries throughout the entire season. For me, finishing third in the world, with the issues that I had, I feel like looking back at it, it’s still something to be proud of. Of course, it wasn’t the season that I wanted to have. There weren’t the titles that I wanted to have, the big titles especially.

Alexander Zverev said at the pre-tournament press conference at the United Cup

Last year was dominated by Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, as they won a combined 14 titles from 22 finals. They also swept away the four Majors.

Again, with the issues that I had, with everything that was happening, to finish number three in the world, I feel like it’s still a good thing. Of course, numbers one and two are quite far ahead, which was not the case at the end of 2024 when I finished number two in the world.

Alexander Zverev added

After the United Cup, the 28-year-old will feature at the Australian Open, which starts on January 18. Sinner will be bidding for a three-peat, while Alcaraz will be aiming to achieve the Career Grand Slam.
