Alexander Zverev had a shocking opening round exit at 2025 Wimbledon tournament. What followed was a heartbreaking confession about his mental health struggles, and a few weeks later the German was seen training at the Rafa Nadal Academy.

Zverev commenced his North American hard court swing with a win over Adam Walton in the opening round of the National Bank Open in Toronto. In the third round, Zverev came back from a set down to defeat Matteo Arnaldi and claim his 500th tour-level match win. After the win, the German ace commented on this milestone.

Reaching this milestone in my professional career is a great achievement. Not many players can say they have reached this number of victories, so it’s really impressive to have achieved it. I hope I can get 500 more, and I look forward to many more to come.

Alexander Zverev said (H/T: puntodebreak)

The German player is just the fifth active man to record 500 match wins and the seventh fastest to have touched that milestone this century. He is the only player born after 1990 to reach this milestone and is also the third German to do so in the Open Era, joining tennis legends Boris Becker (713-214) and Tommy Haas (569-338) in an elite national list.

Ultimately, when you turn pro, you dream of playing on the circuit and succeeding among the best, winning as many matches as possible. Having already achieved 500 victories fills me with immense joy and satisfaction, I am tremendously happy about it.

In doing so, Zverev has further cemented his status as the standard-bearer of German tennis today. Zverev has an impressive record, with 24 ATP titles and a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. However, he is yet to win a Grand Slam despite having reached three major finals.

How Alexander Zverev clinched his 500th match win

Alexander Zverev had a strong start in the first set, not breaking en route to a 4-2 lead, but Matteo Arnaldi eventually clinched the marathon first set after 81 minutes on court. The subsequent sets saw Zverev’s dominance, as he surged to a 3-0 lead en route to taking the second set, then won five games in a row while trailing 1-2 to win the decider.

The World No. 3 sealed the victory after two hours and 46 minutes when one last backhand from the Italian clipped the net. This match marked their second meeting on court, with Zverev winning their first meeting as well in Acapulco.

Alexander Zverev will face Francisco Cerundolo in the next round in Toronto

Now, Zverev, who is top seeded at the Canadian Open, faces a tougher challenge in his next round. The 28-year-old will meet Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo in the fourth round. Cerundolo has a 3-0 head-to-head record over Zverev, though all of those victories have come on clay. It will be interesting to see how both players fare in their first hard court meeting.

Cerundolo defeated Jaume Munar and Tomas Martin Etcheverry in his previous rounds in the tournament.

Zverev has triumphed at the Canadian Open in 2017, where he defeated Roger Federer in straight sets in the final. He is now looking to rediscover that form after a rough start to his 2025 season. The 28-year-old has reached three finals on three different surfaces this season, winning one on home soil in Munich.
