World No. 2 Alexander Zverev has successfully advanced to the third round of the Australian Open after a straight-set win over Pedro Martinez. The German faced some issues with his unforced error count but hopes to address them in the upcoming rounds.
In a lighter moment, Zverev commented on Carlos Alcaraz’s new hairstyle. The World No. 3, along with Lorenzo Musetti, arrived at Rod Laver Arena sporting a fresh haircut. Zverev jokingly expressed his preference for longer hair over the new style.
Zverev and Alcaraz had several intense matches in 2024. Their most notable encounter was the 2024 Roland Garros final, where Alcaraz triumphed in five sets to claim his first clay-court Grand Slam title.

However, Zverev got his revenge at the ATP Finals. The German defeated Alcaraz in straight sets during the group stage, eliminating him from the tournament and advancing to the semifinals.
Alexander Zverev stays on course for a maiden Grand Slam title
Alexander Zverev faced challenges on Wednesday but found a way to secure his spot in the Australian Open’s third round. The second seed defeated Pedro Martinez 6-1, 6-4, 6-1. This victory brought his record against the Spaniard to 2-0 in their matchups. Zverev showed his skill by adapting to Martinez’s variety of shots and winning 77% of his net points.
Zverev, a two-time major finalist, made 22 unforced errors but still delivered a strong performance. His win will boost his confidence as he aims to go further than last year’s semi-final finish. In 2022, Zverev played 21 sets before losing to Daniil Medvedev in the semis. This year, he has started with two straight-set victories.
Martinez, ranked No. 44, tested the two-time ATP Finals champion with his slices and drop shots. However, the Spaniard struggled under pressure as Zverev remained calm and focused. The German player saved all six break points he faced during the match.
Zverev’s win marks the eighth time he has reached the third round in Melbourne. His controlled and efficient play shows his determination to succeed in this year’s tournament.
