Alexandra Eala progressed to the fourth round of the Indian Wells after Coco Gauff retired in the second set of their clash. The Filipino star was facing Gauff for the second time in just a month, having lost their previous meeting, and was playing with clear momentum before the match was abruptly cut short by Gauff.
From the start of the match, Gauff struggled with her serve, a concern that has persisted since the start of the season. She committed six double faults and landed less than half of her first serves. Eala capitalized on those difficulties with consistent forehand returns and more aggression, dominating the match.
Several of Gauff’s service canes became particularly complicated as the match went on. Eala applied more pressure from the baseline, which forced Gauff to lose control of her game plan. The Filipino star was patient in rallies as she tried to force errors, which Gauff could capitalize on and gain the momentum. The first set ended with Gauff hitting right double faults.
Shortly after the second set began, Gauff received medical attention for discomfort in her left arm during a changeover. The injury looks to have come while she attempted to hit a serve. She had complained at the US Open last year, that she was taking longer practices on serves to work on her mistakes.
Despite attempting to continue, Gauff approached the net moments later to explain the issue to Eala and then retire from the match, while trailing 2-6, 0-2. The former US Open champion left the court disappointed as his poor record in Indian Wells continued. However, Eala raised the atmosphere during her on-court interview, praising Gauff and wishing her a speedy recovery:
Yes, first and foremost, I want to say happy Women’s Day, everybody. Bear with me, because I have a lot to say. I want to say thank you to all the incredible women who have paved the way and who have advocated for themselves and for other women. Among them is Coco. So thank you, Coco, for being an amazing competitor and amazing role model, and I really hope that everything is well and you will recover soon.
Wishing you a speedy recovery, Coco 💚

Gauff has never gone beyond the semi-finals of the Indian Wells. Last year, Belinda Bencic shocked the American star in the third round of the tournament. In 2024, she fell to Maria Sakkari in the semi-finals and lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter-finals in 2023. She will go back to the drawing board after failing to get past Eala.
Coco Gauff opens up on her retirement against Alexandra Eala at Indian Wells
Coco Gauff was seeking to get the better of Alexandra Eala in the highly-anticipated clash at Indian Wells. The match was debated after the draw as Gauff had gotten the better of the Filipino in straight sets in the quarter-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships. But on Sunday (March 8), she failed to deliver on the court.

Gauff currently holds an 11-5 win-loss record in 2026, which is a drop from her usual standards. She just has over a week to recover from her arm injury before she competes at the Miami Open in Florida. After her loss to Eala, she released a statement on social media stressing that she felt an unfamiliar pain in her hand and that she is going to have an MRI on Monday (March 9):
Hey everyone, thanks for all the sweet messages. I felt a weird pain in my left arm in the second game of the match, I tried to continue but it was only getting more intense. As most of you, I rarely have to end matches with a retirement but because it was such an unfamiliar pain I decided it was best not to continue. Never felt anything like this before, going to get an MRI tomorrow to see what’s up…

Eala has improved her 2026 record to 12-6. The World No.32 will face Linda Noskova in the round of 16 as she hopes to make back-to-back WTA 1000 quarter-finals. Her run at the Indian Wells is vital as she has a lot of ranking points to defend at the Miami Open, having reached the semi-finals last year.
