Tennis pundit Alize Lim is extremely delighted to see Naomi Osaka‘s unofficial affiliation with Patrick Mouratoglou. Mouratoglou has been out of work since ending his partnership with Holger Rune earlier this year.
Osaka ended her partnership with long-term coach Wim Fissette after losing in the second round of the US Open. Fissette guided the former World No. 1 to two of her four Grand Slam titles but has been unable to help Osaka rediscover her best form after her hiatus in 2023.
I was not surprised because, despite the fact she was coming back from motherhood, we knew how high her goals were. For sure, she’s 100% disappointed and 100% wants to go higher quickly. She has the weapons and she has the level to go back there – remember her match against Iga Swiatek at the French Open.Alize Lim said on the Tennis Channel Inside-In Podcast
Osaka has a 19-16 win-loss record in the 2024 season. Her biggest highlight was her close match against Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros, where she had a match point but eventually lost.
She knows more than us. She can feel it inside and I feel it would be a great association with Patrick Mouratoglou, to be honest. It’s so exciting to watch her play. She would bring so much to women’s tennis if she could get back to that level.Alize Lim added
Osaka is not the only high-profile WTA player making changes to her staff. American Coco Gauff also parted ways with her coach, Brad Gilbert, earlier this week.
Naomi Osaka to start her 2025 season at the ASB Classic in Auckland
Former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka will start her 2025 season at the ASB Classic in Auckland. This will be her first time returning to the city in eight years.
I am looking forward to just embracing the nature of Auckland and of course, playing in a tournament that I have not played in for a long time. I am excited to return to Auckland for the ASB Classic 2025. When I was there last time, I was fortunate to go on a helicopter tour and explore the beaches which I thought were really beautiful.Naomi Osaka said to the reporters ahead of the tournament
Osaka came back to tennis this year after a 15-month maternity break. She began her return in Brisbane and then played at the Australian Open. This year, she faced early exits at the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open. Her best result was reaching the quarterfinals at the Qatar Open, a WTA 1000 event.
Osaka last played in Auckland in 2017, reaching the quarterfinals. The ASB Classic, a WTA 250 tournament, will begin on December 30, 2024. Tournament director Nicolas Lamperin said that they are excited to have her back.
