Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami is all set to move to Lucknow Super Giants ahead of the 2026 IPL season, in a high-profile trade deal from Sunrisers Hyderabad. The news about the deal comes just a day before the deadline for teams to announce its list of retained and released players.

Mohammed Shami has been one of the mainstays in the IPL for the past few years, having played in the competition since the 2013 season. After an impressive 2019 campaign, he experienced a stellar rise in form, not only in the IPL, but also for the Indian cricket team. The Bengal pacer is best remembered for his destructive 2023 ICC ODI World Cup campaign, where he picked 24 wickets in just seven matches.

In IPL 2022 and 2023, Shami scalped 28 wickets in the powerplay, the most by any bowler in the phase in the two years. However, he endured a woeful 2025 IPL season, despite being acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 10 crores, making him their second-most expensive buy at the auction. Shami only played nine matches, picking up six wickets at an average of 56.17, while giving runs away at an economy rate of 11.23.

Shami has also struggled with persistent injury issues, coupled with a decline in form and rhythm, leading to doubts whether the 35-year-old would be retained by SRH ahead of the upcoming 2026 IPL season. However, reports suggest that the pacer might be on his way to Lucknow Super Giants in a trade deal. It is understood that SRH and LSG have agreed on terms and are waiting for his consent for the move.

Shami will be traded to LSG in an all-cash deal, with the Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise paying INR 10 crores. The 35-year-old would bring the much-needed experience into the Lucknow bowling unit, given three out of Lucknow’s foremost pace bowlers, including Avesh Khan, Mayank Yadav and Mohsin Khan, are currently undergoing rehabilitation for multiple injuries, sustained over the year.

Shami also comes in as a replacement for Shardul Thakur, who joined Mumbai Indians in the trade deal this week. At LSG, the veteran India pacer will be greeted with a familiar face, former India bowling coach Bharat Arun.

South Africa legend makes big revelation about Mohammed Shami, citing IPL success

Mohammed Shami has faced the axe quite often now, having been left out of the Indian cricket team since the 2025 Champions Trophy. Amid his recent snub as well as doubts over his IPL future, South African great Dale Steyn made a major revelation about the veteran pacer.

Speaking on Star Sports during India’s opening Test match against South Africa at the Eden Gardens, Steyn revealed that he had once ‘begged’ the SRH management to buy Shami, during his stint as bowling coach at the franchise. He noted that SRH only acquired him once the Proteas icon departed. Shami’s stint at Hyderabad has not lasted long, given his poor returns during the 2025 season.

On Shami’s trade rumors with LSG, Steyn exclaimed that he would be disappointed if SRH loses the fast bowler, but agreed that his fitness would play a key role in retention. The former South African star commented that Shami would make it to any IPL team, should he be fit and ready to perform, while also pointing out his recent struggles and his continuous exclusion from the national team setup. He told JioHotstar:

When I was bowling coach of SRH, I was like, please, can we somehow get Mohammed Shami. And the moment that I wasn’t there, they got him. But yeah, three years ago when I was there, I was begging for him.

Shami has been in good form in the Ranji Trophy, having picked up 15 wickets in three matches at an average of 15.53. Despite the numbers, he was not picked for India’s ongoing red-ball home series against South Africa, or in the previous tours to England and Australia.
