All England Open: Indonesian team forced to withdraw

On 18th March 2021, the Indonesian team was withdrawn from the All England Open. The 111th edition of the historic, prestigious All England Open badminton championships continues to face hurdles as the tournament is being conducted amidst a pandemic.

Earlier there had been a delay in the start of the round one matches as a number of COVID-19 positive results were returned and some were inconclusive. The matches started at 2 PM GMT Instead of 9 AM GMT after the results were being returned negative in the second test.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) and Badminton England confirmed that a number of players and team members from the Indonesian team have been contacted by the UK Government’s National Health Service (NHS) Test and Trace service and are required to self-isolate with immediate effect. In accordance with UK Government requirements, the entire team will have self-isolated for 10 days from the date of their inbound flight after a person traveling onboard tested positive for COVID-19.

As a result, all Indonesian players will not be able to compete in the current or next round of the tournament and have therefore been withdrawn from the YONEX All England Open 2021 by the BWF.

BWF added in their official statement, “While we regret this unfortunate consequence, BWF and Badminton England will continue to follow all protocols required by the UK Government and the local health authorities to ensure the safety of all participants.”
