After Travis Kelce decided to extend his NFL career, the Kansas City Chiefs prepared for his return. On Monday, the star tight end officially put pen to paper on a new deal.
Kelce marked the occasion by FaceTiming his friend, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “What’s up, one-five? Patricio! Let’s go, baby! Home sweet home, you know what I’m sayin’?”
Kelce asked about Mahomes’ rehab before hanging up the phone. It was a touching moment that highlighted the strong bond between two individuals excelling in their respective roles. As fans of the four-time Super Bowl champion franchise celebrated Kelce’s return, questions arose regarding the length of his contract turned heads.

Initially, the Chiefs had agreed on a one-year, $12 million deal with up to $3 million in incentives. However, on Monday, Kelce inked a 3-year, $54.735 million contract that could rise to $57.735 million, averaging $18.245 million per year, according to his agent Mike Simon and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Did Travis Kelce sign a three-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs?
It certainly baffled many to hear about the length of the contract. Signing a 36-year-old tight end on a three-year deal does not happen that often. Sure, Kelce is arguably the Chiefs’ best receiver even in his twilight years. When the chips were down last year, Kelce racked up 800+ yards and finished as the Chiefs’ leading receiver.

But does that truly justify signing a 35+ year old athlete, who is only bound to slow down as he ages? After taking a closer look at the contract details, it turns out it’s really just a one-year deal disguised as a three-year extension. The 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov pointed to the hidden details in the contract.
The [Kansas City] Chiefs’ new contract with TE Travis Kelce is structured as a 1-year, $12M deal with another $3M in incentives, with additional years included for cap purposes. If Kelce wants to continue playing after this season, the deal will be renegotiated next year. As currently structured, it’s set up for this to be his final season, after which he would retire — allowing the cap hits to be spread out over those added years.

On paper, Kelce is locked with KC for the next three years. But in reality, the Chiefs could still choose to release him after June 1 following the 2026 season. Charles Goldman of the AtoZ Sports chimed in with his take on the matter.
The Chiefs could either cut [Travis] Kelce as a post-June 1 cut or place him on the reserve/retired list before the June 8 trigger date. That would effectively void the remaining $40 million and set Kelce up for dead-money hits of over $3.5 million in 2027 and 2028.
Goldman wrote
The Chiefs entered the season as one of the favorites to make a Super Bowl run, aiming for redemption after their loss to the Eagles in the 2024-25 season. However, KC shocked the entire league by struggling to put away teams. To make matters worse, Mahomes suffered an ACL tear, forcing him to undergo surgery. The Chiefs just could not recover from such a big setback. KC finished 6-11 and missed the playoffs for the first time since Mahomes took over as the starting quarterback.
Kelce’s future was uncertain after the defeat in the Super Bowl. He had returned with hopes of winning his fourth ring, but things didn’t go as planned. He’ll get another shot to reach his goal and wrap up his career in style.
