When the Indiana Fever were pegged against the Atlanta Dream in the 1st round of the playoffs, they knew they were going up against a tough team featuring All-Star Allisha Gray and her teammates.

They raced up to finish 3rd in the standings, improving their season record by 15 wins. The offseason additions of Brittney Griner and Brionna Jones helped, but it was Gray who has been consistently their best all-round player.

That culminated in a well-deserved All-Star selection as a starter. The South Carolina product leads the Dream in scoring and has contributed to defense with her improved footwork.

She helped her team to a resounding but controversial Game 1 win over the Fever at home. Then in Game 2, her performance fell flat as she scored just 9 points, shooting 4-16 from the field.

Allisha Gray posted the game’s 2nd-lowest +/-, and was benched after 31 minutes. During the game, there was an incident between the 30-year-old Dream star and a Fever fan.

A Reddit user detailed the incident when, first, the Fever fan shouted out to Lexie Hull that she did not need to put too much effort into guarding Gray, as she was having a difficult night.

The South Carolina native lost her cool and said something nasty to the Fever fan, after which arena security stepped in and escorted the fan and his family out.

A while later, the fan and his family were allowed to return to their seats. Security told them that they were initially removed to help the player in question calm down.

Fans fume at Allisha Gray’s meltdown at Fever game

Basketball fans were already made aware that an incident had happened between Allisha Gray and a Fever fan, as many social media posts confirmed. But they did not know what it was for.

As some started to fan the same flames they did when social media users accused Fever fans of using racial slurs towards Angel Reese in the season-opener, this context started to come to light.

Now WNBA and Fever fans went on a tirade, lashing out at the Atlanta Dream star for being soft and unable to play through heckling. They reminded Fever critics that heckling is part of any sport, and players have to be tough enough to take it.

Moreover, fans were also livid that Allisha Gray used her frustrating game as an excuse to lash out at a fan who did not say anything directly to her. Fans filled social media with their reactions, examples of which are below.

There have been instances where some Indiana Fever fans took advantage of Caitlin Clark‘s popularity to infuse the WNBA with their agenda. But since the league took steps to avoid that from repeating, matters have cooled off.

But players, for instance, Allisha Gray’s best friend, A’ja Wilson, have talked about how they dread Fever fans. Such comments have built the notion that the particular fan base is not accommodating of other players or teams.

However, they proved during this year’s All-Star weekend that Fever fans are very supportive of the players, and their demands as CBA negotiations took center stage.

Allisha Gray and Dream will look to seal playoff win in Game 3

Her Game 2 disappointment aside, Allisha Gray has been one of the most consistent players in the WNBA. Therefore, it would not be a long shot to project that it is possible that she will lead her Atlanta Dream to a victory in Game 3.

They have a deeper and stronger squad than the Indiana Fever, who are relying mostly on short-term contract players, after losing five of their most important players to season-ending injuries.

Allisha Gray knows their opponents can put up a fight. Therefore, they will not be taking any chances when the ball tips off later today at the Gateway Center Arena.
