Turkish tennis player Altug Celikbilek was playing a match at the ITF tournament M15 in Monastir, Tunisia. He was the top seed in the tournament and was up against compatriot Yanki Erel in the semifinals and after their first game, the 28-year-old collapsed on the court.

He was rushed to the hospital and later it was revealed that Celikbilek suffered a brain hemorrhage. The Turkish Tennis Federation released a statement and said Celikbilek was being closely monitored.

The health condition of our national athlete Altug Celikbilek, who fell ill during a match at the M15 Monastir tournament held in Tunisia, is being closely monitored by our Federation and the Tunisian Embassy, and all necessary support is being provided to our athlete and his family. We wish our athlete a speedy recovery.

The Turkish Tennis Federation stated

Celikbilek was eying back-to-back final appearances in Monastir as last month he reached the summit clash of another tournament in Monastir. En route to the semifinals, Celikbilek defeated Maxence Bertimon, Sekou Bangoura, and Pietro Marino.

After Celikbilek’s retirement from his semifinal match, Erel lifted the trophy and dedicated it to Celikbilek. Erel defeated Luca Potenza in straight sets to win the title.

Former tennis player from Turkey Ipek Senoglu took to X to give an update about Altug Celikbilek’s condition. In one of the tweets, she revealed Celikbilek underwent surgery.

Send your prayers and energy to @altugcelikbilek he underwent surgery after the brain hemorrhage he had in the past and the scan came back clean, but it is critical how he will wake up now. Enka, his family and friends are with him.

In another tweet, Senoglu, who has played matches in the main draw of all Grand Slam events, gave a positive update and expressed her hope for hearing good news following different tests.

He has different tests and check-ups today, hopefully good news will come from them as well. The Federation, Enka, Yankı, Cem, Merve family are all giving him moral support from the window.

Celikbilek, currently a World No. 451, is a former World No. 154 (achieved in February 2022) and has three Challengers titles to his name. He has also won six ITF singles titles. The current No. 4 Turkish player has played all the qualifying rounds of Grand Slam tournaments but never advanced to the main draw.
