2x Olympian Aly Raisman recently appeared on Today Show to talk about the ongoing bronze medal controversy surrounding Jordan Chiles and Ana Barbosu. She questions why the IOC can’t give one more medal to settle the incident as they have done before.
Raisman could relate to Chiles the most as she has been in such a situation before. However, in her case, the appeal was considered and she boosted herself from 4th to 3rd spot on the balance beam in the 2012 Olympics.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for Chiles as the messy incident dragged the athletes, their families, fans, and even politics into the situation. Raisman notes, “It’s supposed to be a celebration” but it ended in an unforeseen incident which the athletes are suffering from.
This is just so heartbreaking, and I’m just so gutted for Jordan…This is completely devastating…I think it’s so unfair. It’s so cruel.Aly Raisman on Today Show.
The IOC upon investigation declared that Jordan Chiles had to surrender the bronze medal to Ana Barbosu. Despite the USA Gymnastics’ efforts to retain the medal, their plea was denied by the CAS even with new evidence upfront.
While Raisman understands that the judges are “humans”, she still can’t overlook the present situation which has made the athlete’s lives hell in the past few days. “It’s unfair,” she stated.
Aly Raisman addresses “horrific bullying” Jordan Chiles had to endure
Aly Raisman admitted that she had been in contact with Jordan Chiles after the incident but preferred to keep their conversation private. She noted how the “horrific bullying” online has caused further stress to the already hyped-up situation.
“My heart’s going out to her,” she said. Following the IOC’s declaration on the medal reinstatement, Chiles noted that she’ll be “removing myself from social media for my mental health thank you.”
It’s appalling, but I think that the organizations that are in charge of this need to really look at the athletes’ mental health and how much this is affecting them, and how cruel it is to take a medal away from someone. It’s just, like, unfathomable to me.Aly Raisman on Today Show.
A ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport was issued to strip Team USA gymnast Jordan Chiles of her bronze medal, saying it’s because her coach's inquiry into the scores came four seconds too late. @Aly_Raisman shares her perspective on TODAY. pic.twitter.com/3yBurjyMYG

The USA Gymnastics stated that they’ll not be removing themselves from the case and will appeal to a higher court regarding this. For now, the ruling has been in favor of Barbosu, as the IOC and CAS both believe she deserves the bronze medal after the investigation.
