West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph hogged the headlines in the recent third ODI against England at the Kensington Oval Barbados. He walked out of the field after not coming into agreement with the field placement with the skipper Shai Hope. The Windies had to play with ten fielders for one over until he finally made his comeback to the field. This might have been the first instance that a bowler has left the field after a disagreement with the captain.
The incident happened in the fourth over of the first innings when West Indies were bowling. The cameras caught Joseph arguing with Hope as he was not happy with the field placements of the captain. However, everyone was surprised when he decided to walk off the field.
Joseph displayed his frustration with the position of the slip fielder as the first delivery of the over went to the point region. However, he scalped the wicket of Jordan Cox with a fierce bouncer. The wicket did not stop Joseph as he continued to show his disappointment with the captain’s field placement.
Former cricketers do not support Alzarri Joseph’s behaviour with Shai Hope
Former South Africa wicketkeeper, Mark Boucher, was in the commentary box at that moment and he did not support the behaviour of Joseph. He stated that the bowler has to bowl to the plans and field set by the captain as he is the leader of the team. If the bowler has any disagreements with the captain, it needs to be sorted in the dressing room and not on the field.
Meanwhile, the Windies Coach, Darren Sammy, also did not support the behaviour from Joseph. He stated that such kind of behaviour is unacceptable on the cricket field and does not comply with the culture that he is trying to build inside the dressing room. He promised to have a chat about this incident and solve it inside the dressing room. Joseph went on to bowl his 10 overs as he returned with figures of 2/45. The Windies managed to win the contest by eight wickets.
