Amadou Onana currently plies his trade for Premier League club Everton and the Belgium National team. The 22-year-old defensive midfielder was in the starting line-up against Slovakia on Monday as the Red Devils were forced to admit defeat at the hands of their opponents. Even though the player put up a solid display at the back, it was a clip of the player’s activities off the pitch that went viral.
In a viral video, the youngster is seen speaking to the press in fluent Dutch. Onana was confidently replying to a reporter’s question as to what needs to be improved in the Belgium squad when another reporter misnamed him for Andre (Onana) of Manchester United. To the surprise of many, Onana went out of his way to correct the reporter.
Effortlessly switching to English, the Belgian corrected the reporter before proceeding to answer his question. Fans could barely comprehend the ‘elegant’ switch in tone and language.
Andre is not even my name, mate. Do you know what I mean?Amadou Onana told a reporter
What impressed fans even more was the player’s decision to continue with the interview despite being visibly annoyed by his interviewer.
Arsenal in pole position to sign FC Barcelona target
Amadou Onana is one of the most heavily sought after players in the Premier League, with FC Barcelona, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur running for his signature. It is no secret that Mikel Arteta is a huge admirer of the Belgian and with the potential departure of Thomas Partey, the 22-year-old is an easy option for the Gunners.
Everton are also desperately looking to make significant outgoings so as to balance the books ahead of the new season. Even though Arsenal have shown interest in the youngster, La Liga giants FC Barcelona are also in the race for the player. However, the club’s regrettable financial situation prevents them from going all-out for the player.
The arrival of Hansi Flick has also created the need to bring in a new pivot – a position that the club have found difficult to replace ever since the departure of Sergio Busquets. Onana has two more years left on his Everton contract. Any club looking to sign him will have to meet his release clause set at £60 million. His next game for Belgium will be a crucial one, as they come up against Romania in what will likely be a ‘must-win’ match.
