On December 14, two individuals opened fire at the Jewish community during a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney’s Bondi Beach. According to the police, the gunmen were father and son.
The father was shot dead by the police, while the son is in a critical condition in a hospital. As per the reports, at least 15 people were killed. The shooting was called a terror attack by the police, and it was the deadliest one of Australia since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, where 35 people died.
Tennis season starts in Australia as it will be the host of several tournaments, including the first Major of the season, the Australian Open. In the aftermath of the shooting, WTA ace Amanda Anisimova took to her Instagram story to share her condolences.
When will it end.. was one of the thoughts. But we’ve been thinking that for far too long.. My prayers go out to all those affected.

The father was 50, while the son was 24, and they used licensed firearms. Although the gun laws in Australia are already tight, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wants to make them even tougher in the wake of the Bondi Beach incident.

Anisimova has won one title in Australia, the WTA 250 Melbourne Summer Set 2 by defeating Aliaksandra Sasnovich. At the Australian Open, Anisimova has never progressed beyond the fourth round, reaching the stage in 2019, 2022, and 2024. This year, she failed to progress beyond the second round.
Alexandra Stevenson on Amanda Anisimova’s weaknesses
Amanda Anisimova had an impressive season this year as she played five finals, two of which were in Grand Slam events. She reached the title clash of Wimbledon en route to which she knocked out Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals, but suffered an embarrassing 6-0, 6-0 defeat at the hands of Iga Swiatek.

Anisimova then progressed to the final of the US Open, and this time, the four-time Grand Slam singles champion defended her crown by denying the win to the home favorite. Former player Alexandra Stevenson during The Inside-In Tennis Podcast, pointed out Anisimova’s weaknesses and also compared her backhand to former World No.1s Lindsay Davenport and Tracy Austin.
That backhand is technically sound and it is a pure strike, it’s much like Lindsay Davenport’s backhand, the technique, Tracy Austin’s backhand, you can go down the list of the best backhands and the way she hits it is just…it’s just poetry in motion, because you watch how she hits the ball and it’s like everybody should look at that on the backhand side.
Apart from the two Majors, Anisimova reached the title clashes of two WTA 1000s: at the Qatar Open, she lost to Jelena Ostapenko, while at the China Open, she suffered defeat at the hands of Linda Noskova. The 24-year-old also lost the Queen’s Club Championships final to Tatjana Maria.
Now, the serve she could use a couple of adjustments. I feel like, because the women’s game, the serve is not a high priority, and there’s a lot of issues within the top 10 in serving, that’s why [Elena] Rybakina won the year-end [WTA] Finals indoors. But, Amanda, I feel like can beef up her serve, defense, and that will get her to win a Grand Slam.
Alexandra Stevenson added
On the back of her performances, Anisimova made her debut at the WTA Finals, but her run ended in the semifinals against eventual runner-up Sabalenka. In the round-robin stage, she beat Swiatek, Madison Keys, and lost to eventual champion Rybakina. Anisimova finished the season in fourth spot (career-best) on the rankings table with a 47-18 win-loss record.
