Over two months ago, Amanda Anisimova suffered probably the biggest heartbreak of her career. Playing in her career’s first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, where she locked horns with Iga Swiatek, Anisimova completely succumbed to the pressure. The result of the match was a 6-0, 6-0 humiliation.

In front of the roaring partisan crowd at the US Open, Anisimova took her revenge. On Wednesday (September 3), the Pole’s Grand Slam campaign of the season ended, with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat to Anisimova in the quarterfinals.

Swiatek was clearly the favorite to win, but she knew how Anisimova plays, not expecting a repeat of the Wimbledon final. So, how did Anisimova make this incredible turnaround that saw her smiling and laughing after the sobbing phase post Wimbledon defeat?

I think I overcame that very quickly. I cried for about half an hour until I talked on the phone with someone and started laughing about it. Perhaps a few years ago, I wouldn’t have been able to do that. It was something I had never experienced before in my life. I had never lost 6-0, 6-0. Doing it, moreover, in a Grand Slam final, gave me a lot of experience.

Anisimova now has a 1-1 head-to-head record over Swiatek. She has reached a Grand Slam semifinal for the third time in her career. Before this season, Anisimova had never advanced to the fourth round of her home Grand Slam tournament.

I am proud of myself. I have shown people that with a positive mindset or by working on things, you can achieve good results. I am very happy.

It was Anisimova’s second career Top 2 win after her victory over Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals of this year’s Wimbledon. Anisimova has now become the first American woman to reach the semifinals of all three Grand Slam surfaces since Serena Williams and Venus Williams.

Swiatek had the chance to reclaim her No.1 spot from defending champion Sabalenka, who will play home favorite Jessica Pegula in the next round. The six-time Grand Slam champion, also the 2022 US Open winner, has reached the finals and clinched two titles this year- Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Masters.

Wimbledon heartbreak helped Amanda Anisimova beat Iga Swiatek

Amanda Anisimova will be squaring off against Naomi Osaka in the semifinals of the US Open. The upcoming match will be the third in Grand Slam events as well as her third overall match against the four-time Grand Slam champion.

At the press conference after knocking out Iga Swiatek, Anisimova revealed that before entering the quarterfinal clash, she watched her Wimbledon final. She said she needs a great deal of improvement in her physical strength to tackle fatigue during two-week tournaments.

I watched it last night (laughs). To see what I could do to avoid what happened, or see what I did wrong. I saw that I was very slow. I’m human, and sometimes we blank out. I was also very tired from the whole tournament.

Osaka, before scheduling the match against Anisimova, knocked out Karolina Muchova in straight sets. The winner of the Osaka versus Anisimova will face Aryna Sabalenka or Jessica Pegula.

Osaka booked a Grand Slam semifinal spot for the first time since her victory at the 2021 Australian Open. So far this season, Anisimova has played three finals, winning her career’s first WTA 1000 title at the Qatar Open, losing the Queen’s Club Championships to Tatjana Maria, and the Wimbledon final to Swiatek.

The Japanese ace is aiming to reach her third final of the season following the ASB Classic and the Canadian Open, where she handed a walkover to Clara Tauson in the former event and lost to Victoria Mboko in the WTA 1000 event in Montreal.
