Iga Swiatek, in the upcoming Wimbledon final, will be up against a player who she has never yet played on the WTA tour. The player is Amanda Anisimova, who has reached her first Grand Slam final after overcoming Aryna Sabalenka in their ninth tour-level encounter.
Sabalenka was aiming to reach her first Wimbledon final and win her first grass-court title. And while she was successful in beating Anisimova in the fourth round of the French Open this year, she ended up registering her sixth defeat to the American ace at SW19.

The Belarusian has now lost all her Grand Slam matches to American players this season. In the two Majors before Wimbledon, Sabalenka played the finals in both the Australian Open and the French Open, losing both to Madison Keys and Coco Gauff, respectively.
The three-time Grand Slam singles champion was aiming to reach her eighth final of the season and win her fourth title, following her victories in Brisbane, Miami, and Madrid. Sabalenka is a two-time finalist on grass but has never claimed a title. At Wimbledon, she has now played her third semifinal.
While Anisimova had to toil hard to secure a spot in the Wimbledon final for the first time, Swiatek booked a spot in the championship match without breaking a sweat as she secured the semifinal win over Belinda Bencic with a 6-2, 6-0 scoreline.
Iga is such an unbelievable player. She’s also been an inspiration to me. Her work ethic and all of her achievements have been really inspiring. I’m sure it’ll be an amazing match again. Getting to compete against an unbelievable player again is gonna be super special. Hopefully, I can bring some high-quality tennis and make it a battle.

Anisimova and Swiatek had faced each other as juniors in 2016, which the latter won. The World No.12 is chasing her second title of the season, while the former World No.1 is bidding for her first title since her fourth Roland Garros victory last year.
Amanda Anisimova will reach her career-best ranking after Wimbledon
Anisimova currently stands in the 12th position on the rankings table. But in the live rankings, she has climbed five places up to occupy the seventh position, her career-best ranking.

And if she beats Iga Swiatek, she will remove Mirra Andreeva to start the next week as a World No.5 player. Anisimova took a mental health break in 2023 and returned to tennis last year. Because of her rankings, Anisimova did not get direct entry into Wimbledon last year and had to play in the qualifiers, but was unsuccessful in reaching the main draw. She thinks taking that break has helped her tennis.
It’s a special message because many people told me that I would never return to the top after the time off I took. That was hard for me to digest because I was thinking about coming back and winning Grand Slams someday. Proving to everyone that you can reach the top and prioritize yourself is tremendously special to me. It means a lot.

Swiatek, on the other hand, will be in the third spot if she wins Wimbledon, removing Jessica Pegula, who suffered an opening-round defeat.
Before this season, Anisimova had produced her best Wimbledon performance when she reached the quarterfinals in 2022. Swiatek too was a quarterfinalist in the grass-court Major before this season (reached in 2023), while last year, Yulia Putintseva knocked her out in the third round.
The five-time Major champion will be playing her second final on grass following the Bad Homburg Open, which she played before arriving in London. She lost that match to Pegula. Anisimova too, was the runner-up in this year’s Queen’s Club Championship, where she reached the grass-court final for the first time.
