India’s Tokyo Olympics-bound boxing ace Amit Panghal secured victory and a gold medal in the 52 kg category of the Cologne World Cup. However, the end was not the one he’d have ideally liked as preparation for the Olympic Games as there was no bout after the finalist, Germany’s Argishti Terteryan gave a walkover to the Indian.

However, Panghal had a memorable win in the semi-final bout where he defeated Frenchman Billal Bennama who is a bronze-medallist from the world championship. Meanwhile, another Indian boxer Satish Kumar who competes in the 91kg+ category suffered from the same fate as that of the German Terteryan as he sustained injuries before giving a walkover to his opponent in the final.

Manisha and Sakshi to battle it out in the final

The Boxing Federation of India tweeted about the results of the world cup saying, “Update from Germany @Boxerpanghal wins gold, his opponent has given a walkover. #SatishKumar has picked up an injury from his semi-final bout and has withdrawn from the final match, on doctor’s advice. He settles for a Silver Medal.”
