Amon-Ra St. Brown doesn’t enjoy playing NFL games on national holidays, especially on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Eve. Similar to football fans, he wants to enjoy them with his family members rather than running post routes.
Nevertheless, barring any last-minute changes, St. Brown must play on December 25, 2025, because the Detroit Lions’ playoff qualification is on the line. The Lions started the season with a string of victories. However, three defeats in the last four have left them in a sticky situation.
If the Lions don’t defeat the already-eliminated Minnesota Vikings, the Detroit franchise would be one step closer to joining their divisional rivals on the couch. Despite the implications, St. Brown would prefer if there weren’t any games on the 25th. Amon-Ra St. Brown told his brother on the St. Brown podcast:
I don’t even have kids yet. If I had kids, I’d be even more pissed [about playing on Christmas and Thanksgiving Day]. Like, you can’t be spending it with your family, get to see your kids open gifts. I feel like that’s something that a lot of parents love to see and can’t wait for… I don’t even like it, and I’m not even a f****g father yet.

On this year’s Thanksgiving Day, the Lions lost 31-24 to the Green Bay Packers. St. Brown didn’t register a single reception. Two years ago, the Lions recorded a 30-24 victory against the Vikings. St. Brown had 12 catches for 106 yards and one touchdown on that occasion.
These two met in week 9 earlier this year, with the Vikings enjoying the spoils of victory. They won 27-24. St. Brown finished with 9 receptions for 97 yards.
St. Brown is making $30 million AAV after penning a four-year, $120 million contract extension ahead of the 2024 season. Since then, he has accumulated 210+ receptions for 2300+ receiving yards and 23 touchdowns.
The Lions need Amon-Ra St. Brown to have a good game to stay in the playoff hunt
The Lions are 8-7 following last week’s controversial loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. A win over the Vikings will ease their pain heading into the final week of regular-season football.

Unfortunately, a defeat will bring them to the brink of elimination. According to NFL research, the Lions have just a 6% chance of making the postseason, and if they win this game, that will rise to 8%. If they lose, that will fall below 1%.

The Vikings are bound to play their best football, even though JJ McCarthy will miss the game due to a hand injury. St. Brown becomes a key figure in the fixture. The fifth-year wideout has had 71 catches for 828 yards and has scored 4 touchdowns in 9 games against the Vikings in his career.

Quarterback Jared Goff has been in stellar form. Goff, who signed a $212 million and $170 million guaranteed contract with the Lions, ranks third in the league with 4036 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions in 15 games. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs ranks seventh with 1107 yards on 207 carries and 13 rushing touchdowns.
