John Brown, the father of NFL stars Amon-Ra St. Brown and Equanimeous St. Brown, has landed squarely in the middle of one of the most racially charged controversies in recent memory. An old video that has resurfaced has put the Brown household once again in the yellow papers.

It was not long ago that the Detroit Lions wideout, Amon-Ra, revealed that his dad used to kiss his sons on the lips. The headlines further stated that the senior Brown also made Amon-Ra French kiss his brother growing up, even during high school. In addition to Amon-Ra and Equanimeous, John Brown has one more son, Osiris St. Brown.

The newly surfaced clip from last summer has added a whole other layer of character arc for the father figure. Speaking to his sons, Brown said, “I believe in breeding. Look at you, good athlete, I’m Black, mom is White.” He compared racial lineage to something being “stepped on” or “cut,” implying that continued racial mixing could “weaken” a desirable trait or outcome.

Brown suggested that future generations must be cautious about whom they have children with, as to preserve what he views as superior traits, referring to his racial background as “black gold.”

The clip continued with John Brown elaborating on his reasoning for marrying a White woman, Miriam, who is German. He explained that he knew that he ‘could cut it once‘ because of his above-mentioned racial black gold. If this talk was disheartening and out of bounds for some, he went ahead and made a supposedly objectifying statement about women’s physical traits.

John Brown, Amon-Ra St Brown’s father, has previously spoken on similar terms

It was not even the first time John Brown had said something on these lines. In a December 2021 appearance on the Momentum podcast, John Brown had advised his sons to marry Black women in order to produce athletic offspring.

He even used the same logic back then as well, about ‘cutting the Blackness’. He argued that, being half-Black, if their offspring were from a White mother, they would be reducing the Black heritage and genes in the child. He had noted down that it is the only way that they could give birth to athletes.

The recently resurfaced clips had a very minuscule amount of what was said on the podcast from years back. He described the physical traits, that too in very startling clinical terms, of what makes a woman ideal to birth out an athlete.

You need a volleyball girl, like [5-foot-9]… African American, oh yeah. Make sure her knees are lined up, you gotta be careful with that. I like little ankles, because they’re swift. You want strong knees, and ask her about her family… did your dad play sports? Did your mom play? You gotta think about these things.

Even back then, the comments were met with objection. The comments questioned the nature vs. nurture debate, whether genetics is the sole factor determining a child’s success in a sport. In addition, it should be noted that the child may not be interested in sport and such an environment might take out a child’s choice to be different.

It might have worked for Amon-Ra and Equanimeous to start lifting at a young age and become known footballers, but it is not a 100% fail-safe formula.
