This week’s SmackDown featured a high-stakes matchup to determine the No. 1 contender for LA Knight‘s United States Championship. In a neck-and-neck battle of Latinos, Santos Escobar pipped Andrade. The latter gave his all, but Carmelo Hayes had other plans. Bearing malice for the current WWE Speed Champion, Melo denied Edolo a crack at the US title.

Incensed at his fate, Andrade took to X. He affirmed how Hayes’ uncalled meddling handed him his first singles loss in WWE over the past seven months. The 34-year-old outright said that what Carmelo did was a stupid decision on his part. In a video posted by WWE across their digital platforms, Melo could be heard saying that if he weren’t entitled to win, neither was Andrade.

For the unversed, El Edolo and Hayes have been at loggerheads since Money in the Bank. They’ve had a couple of one-on-one matches since then. And, interestingly, Carmelo Hayes has yet to register a win against the former AEW star. Meanwhile, on the other hand, Santos Escobar is next in line to challenge LA Knight for the US title.

Escobar would feel it’s his time to silence the naysayers. Ever since moving onto the main roster, the Legado Del Fantasma chief hasn’t had a watershed moment. It’s high time he broke the glass ceiling before it’s too late. However, it’s going to be a tall ask for Santos against a highly charged-up megastar.

Knight is still riding on a high of SummerSlam. He had to overcome the immaculate in-ring prowess of Logan Paul, coupled with outside interference from rapper MGK. Despite having his back stacked against the wall, the 41-year-old displayed unmatched guile and logged in the win of his career.

LA Knight got his theme song upgraded on SmackDown

Ushering into SmackDown, LA Knight had that unapologetic cadence as usual, but for a change, he had a title tied around his waist. Not only that, but he walked out to a new theme song. It was a remix of his previous battle hymn with no major tweaks.

The Megastar seems well and truly in for a lengthy title reign. But he first needs to weather the Santos Escobar storm. Knight will have numbers against him, with LDF always having Escobar’s back. If LA gets past him, there’s a wide array of names who’d be keeping an eye on the prestigious United States title.

A repackaged Giovanni Vinci might also be a threat once he gets back to business. A hype vignette for his return was aired on SmackDown last night. After getting kicked-out of Imperium, he would now aim for gold. And what better than making a statement against LA Knight?
