Team World has now become the Laver Cup champion for the third time. They maintained their lead throughout on the final day, all thanks to Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz.

On Day 2, Team World won every match, and making a comeback looked like a huge task for the players of Team Europe. Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud tried to narrow the gap by beating Alex Michelsen and Reilly Opelka.

Team Europe’s Jakub Mensik failed to go past de Minaur. They still trailed 9-12 after Alcaraz’s win over Francisco Cerundolo.

In the final, Alexander Zverev was up against Fritz. Before this match, Fritz had won five consecutive matches, and now the tally is six, while in their overall head-to-head record, the American now holds a 9-5 lead.

Andre Agassi, who led Team World for the first time, teased Alcaraz during the captain’s speech. Agassi, the former World No.1 and the winner of eight Grand Slam titles, urged the 22-year-old not to be so greedy in Grand Slam events.

First, I want to say to Team Europe, I mean, it is such an honor to sit on the side of the court and watch you guys do what you do. It’s remarkable, and I wish you the brightest futures. Carlos, don’t be so greedy with all those Grand Slams. Share some with your brothers, for God’s sake.

Alcaraz needs two more Grand Slam titles to match Agassi’s tally. He took home his sixth Major by defeating arch-rival Jannik Sinner in the 2025 US Open final, which made him the second youngest man to win six Majors. Agassi was in the stands of Court Philippe-Chatrier when the Spaniard overcame a two-set deficit and saved three match points to defend his French Open title by beating Sinner.

Taylor Fritz on beating Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz

Taylor Fritz takes more pride in defeating Carlos Alcaraz than in his win over Rafael Nadal in the 2022 Indian Wells final. Fritz and Nadal were tied at 2-2, but against Alcaraz, it was his career’s first win after three consecutive defeats.

Yeah, I mean, I think I take almost more pride in this one, because I feel like I — start to finish like I won it and I earned it. I didn’t really win any of the — I think a lot of the decisive points in the match weren’t so much off of, like, him giving it to me. I felt like I made it happen in those moments. I, yeah, just started to finish playing an amazing match, and I went out and I took it.

Taylor Fritz said at the press conference

Both Fritz and Alcaraz will be playing the Japan Open, the main draw of which is scheduled to start on September 24. Alcaraz and Fritz will be the first and second seeds, respectively, and will only face each other when they reach the final.

Fritz will be up against Canada’s Gabriel Diallo, while Alcaraz will lock horns with Sebastian Baez to kick-start his campaign. The 27-year-old will be bidding to win his third title of the season after two grass-court wins at the Eastbourne International and the Stuttgart Open.

Alcaraz, at present, is the most successful man on the tour this year as he has played nine finals and clinched seven titles, including five Big Titles. Last year at the Japan Open, Fritz suffered a first-round exit, losing the match to eventual champion Arthur Fils. Alcaraz will be making his debut in Tokyo. The Murcia-native skipped the China Open, which he won last year by defeating then-defending champion Sinner.
