Andre Agassi showered praises on Carlos Alcaraz for his performance this season and his skills on the court, but is hoping for his downfall at the Laver Cup. The tennis legend is Team World’s captain after replacing John McEnroe, who won the title twice before stepping down. Agassi hopes to do the same, but he’s anxious about the influence Alcaraz brings.

Alcaraz will be the first World No.1 to participate at the Laver Cup since Rafael Nadal in 2017. He’s entering the tournament on the back of his excellent Grand Slam victory at the US Open in New York. The 22-year-old has been the most in-form player on tour since April and has won four of the last five tournaments he competed in.

Last year, at the Laver Cup, he decided the winner of the title as he fought for Team Europe in Berlin. He defeated Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz in the deciding match, earning eight of Team Europe’s 13 points. In fact, he became the third-highest point scorer for Team Europe after just playing in one time at the event.

He’s behind Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev, who have played four and five times, respectively, in the tournament. He has lost only one match at the event and that came in doubles, where he and Zverev lost to Fritz and Shelton. He is expected to bring to Team Europe more intensity and energy than last year.

Agassi, who is a big supporter of Alcaraz is now worried about the World No.1’s influence. During his interview with the Laver Cup, the former World No.1 revealed that Alcaraz has all the qualities of the Big 3, but hopes his qualities lead to his downfall against Team World at the tournament:

He can defend like Novak. He has soft hands and feel like Federer, and he can generate RPMs and pace like Rafa. And you’ve got the speed — offensively and defensively. You’ve got the passion that keeps him fired up the whole time. He kind of has the whole package. The thing you have to hope for is that he gets too creative out there. You hope he crosses that line every now and then to give you some hope.

Alcaraz has a good record against all the members of Team World, which includes Taylor Fritz, Alex de Minaur, Joao Fonseca, Alex Michelsen, Francisco Cerundolo, and Reilly Opelka. The Spaniard will now look to continue with impeccable form this season at the Laver Cup in San Francisco.

Carlos Alcaraz admits it’s weird teaming up with players who are his competitors on tour

Carlos Alcaraz links up with Alexander Zverev, Jakub Mensik, Casper Ruud, Holger Rune, and Flavio Cobolli in Team Europe. The team has been tipped to win the Laver Cup by tennis legend Roger Federer. Also, Alcaraz has been dubbed the team leader due to his current form and experience on the court.

However, during the aforementioned interview, he was asked how he felt being in the same team with players he had competed against a few weeks ago. The Spaniard revealed that it is weird, but he still loves it because of the new energy and atmosphere it brings:

It was weird. My rivals, one week ago I was fighting against them on the tennis court, and now they were my teammates. But I loved it. I loved the energy, the atmosphere. We’re all together just to try to bring the Cup to Europe. To get to know them off the court, as well, was a great experience for me. I couldn’t miss it this year.

Alcaraz has lost only two matches since the Monte Carlo Masters in April. They came against Holger Rune at the Barcelona Open and Jannik Sinner at the Wimbledon Championship. He arrives at the Laver Cup, just weeks after winning the Cincinnati Open and US Open.
