Holger Rune has been seen training in Washington with tennis legend Andre Agassi, leading to speculation about a potential coaching partnership. This comes amid ongoing changes in Rune’s coaching setup. Kenneth Carlsen currently serves as his coach, following a split with Patrick Mouratoglou in July 2024.

Agassi, a former world No. 1, has previous coaching experience with top players. He worked with Novak Djokovic between 2017 and 2018, then joined Grigor Dimitrov’s team until 2020. If the partnership with Rune becomes official, Agassi would be the latest Grand Slam winner to join Rune’s corner, following Boris Becker’s stint from late 2023 to early 2024.

Rune’s 2025 season has been unpredictable. He made it to the fourth round at both the Australian Open and French Open. However, illness forced him out of Rotterdam, and food poisoning ended his run in Acapulco. After a short recovery period, he reached the final at Indian Wells but lost to Jack Draper. He then exited early at the Miami Masters.

His clay-court results have also been inconsistent. He retired in Monte Carlo while trailing Pedro Martinez but bounced back with an impressive performance in Barcelona, defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final. At Wimbledon, Rune lost in the first round to Nicolas Jarry in five sets, later citing knee pain as the reason for his struggles.

The DC Legacy of Andre Agassi and Other Americans Revealed

Sebastian Korda ended a 17-year drought for home champions at the Mubadala Citi DC Open last year. This year, American players are aiming to continue the momentum. Taylor Fritz leads the charge, with Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe also hopeful of adding their names to the list of 12 different Americans who have won the title since 1969.

Andre Agassi dominated the tournament in the ‘90s. Over 10 visits, he won five titles and suffered five losses. His reign included a victory as World No. 1 in 1995. Michael Chang, a former World No. 2, was also successful in Washington, winning back-to-back titles in 1996 and 1997.

In the early 2000s, young Americans like Andy Roddick and James Blake took over. Roddick became the youngest champion in tournament history in 2001, winning his first title in D.C. He added titles in Atlanta and Houston that same season. In the final, Roddick defeated Sjeng Schalken, a Dutch player, whom he later helped escape a hotel fire in Rome.

Roddick returned to win the title again in 2005 and 2007. His 2007 victory marked the last time an American won in Washington until Korda’s triumph last year. In 2005, Roddick defeated James Blake, who was seeking his second D.C. title.

A rising star, Joao Fonseca from Brazil, will make his debut in New York. The young talent has been making waves on the ATP Tour, winning his first ATP title at the Argentina Open and is expected to be a future tennis sensation.
