Andre Onana is no stranger to taking ‘risks’. The Cameroonian goalkeeper has been ‘eye-catching’ for the Red Devils to say the least, with his first season under Erik ten Hag gaining popularity for all the wrong reasons. From hilarious reactions to costly errors and surprising decisions, the former Ajax and Inter Milan keeper seldom fails to turn heads.
Ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season, United were up against eternal rivals Manchester City in the FA Community Shield. Inseparable in regulation time and extra-time that followed, the sides were to be separated from the spot. Building upon his ‘bold’ claim that he’ll keep taking more risks this season, the 28-year-old put on a show in the penalty shootout.
Much to the surprise of the crowd, Onana let Haaland have an open shot as he left more than two-thirds of his post wide open. Originally thought of as an intimidation tactic, the goalkeeper’s ‘move’ seemingly had no effect on the shot taker.
Erling Haaland comfortably converted his kick and laughed to himself as if in surprise of what Onana tried to pull off.
Fans laugh at Onana as Pep Guardiola adds insult to injury for Man United
Manchester City have made it a habit of getting the better of their local rivals. Except for the unexpected defeat in the FA Cup last season, the Cityzens have enjoyed a lot of success against the red side of Manchester. Following their emphatic victory in the Community Shield, Guardiola’s comments aimed at his rivals seemed to rub salt in their wounds.
I enjoyed starting the season with a win against our rivals Manchester. We are really pleased. Many players are on holiday and we're far from our best. But it's better to start by winning a trophy.Pep Guardiola said in a post-match interview (via The Mirror)
A fan commented that Andre Onana was a proper comedian when it comes to tense moments. Another added that United are in for a long season if someone fails to convince Ten Hag to replace the Cameroonian.
Despite the loss, Ten Hag backed Jonny Evans who missed his penalty in the shootout. Ten Hag backed Jadon Sancho (who also missed his penalty), adding that he will be taking more penalties this season. Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring before Bernardo Silva pulled City level from a header in the final minutes.
