On Sunday, tempers once again flared up in an NHL game as the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Boston Bruins took part in the 2026 Stadium Series. During this, goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy and Jeremy Swayman dropped their gloves and got involved in a rare goalie fight.
For the unversed, the Stadium Series is a series of regular games of the NHL season that are played outdoors. This year, the Raymond James Stadium, home of the NFL side Tampa Bay Buccaneers, hosted this event.
In front of 64,000 fans, the Lightning made a quick start and took the lead inside 11 seconds through Brandon Hagel. The Bruins had a strong response to this and ended the first period by being 3-1 up thanks to goals from Alex Steeves, Morgan Geekie and Viktor Arvidsson.
The second period saw the Boston-based side score two more times. After Matthew Poitras made it 4-1 through a backhand shot, Geekie scored his second goal of the game and put the Bruins 5-1 up.
The Lightning pulled one back through Oliver Bjorkstrand on a power play goal. Things got heated after this goal.
Hagel would poke at a covered puck, which did not sit well with Swayman. The Bruins’ goalie snapped at the forward, which resulted in a scrum taking place. After watching the actions of Swayman from the other end, Vasilevskiy dropped his gloves and headed forward for a fight.
Swayman would remove his helmet and urge the Russian goaltender to do the same. Following this, the two netminders went at each other at the center ice and exchanged haymakers.
The fight would end quickly as Swayman lost his footing. Fans at the stadium would erupt with cheers as the two goalies fought each other in a rare fight.

SECOND GOALIE FIGHT OF THE YEAR! 🤯 pic.twitter.com/BKSkEhvQIb
While goalie fights are rare in the NHL, this is the second such scrum between two netminders this year. Just two weeks ago, Sergei Bobrovsky and Alex Nedeljkovic got involved in one during the Florida Panthers and San Jose Sharks game.
Their fight was the first bout between goaltenders since February 1, 2020, when Mike Smith and Cam Talbot battled each other during the Battle of Alberta between the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames.
Following this clash, Vasilevskiy and Swayman would receive a 5-minute penalty for fighting. A few minutes later, Swayman was charged with a 2-minute penalty for delaying the game.
Andrei Vasilevskiy has last laugh over Jeremy Swayman following Lightning’s epic shootout win
The 2026 Stadium Series between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Boston Bruins did not disappoint the fans. It had goals, goalie fights and an epic comeback. Goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy ended up having the last laugh over Jeremy Swayman as the Lightning emerged as winners through a shootout.

After the goalie fight in the second period, Darren Raddysh and Nick Paul struck in quick succession during a power play to make it a 5-4 game. In the third period, Nikita Kucherov tied the game at 5-5 through a slap shot.
With the game tied at 5-5 after overtime, a shootout was required to separate the two teams. During this, the two teams would miss their first two attempts.
On the third attempt, Jake Guentzel fired past Swayman. Meanwhile, David Pastrnak failed to score on the third attempt for the Bruins, resulting in a 6-5 shootout loss for the Bruins.

This triumph was the Lightning’s 6th win in their last 7 games, improving their record to 35-14-4 for the season. Meanwhile, this loss ended a 2-game winning run of the Bruins, who are now 32-20-4. Their next assignment will see them take on the Florida Panthers before the league goes on a break for the Winter Olympics in Milan.
