Andrey Rublev won’t judge his good friend Daniil Medvedev. Rublev, who is also the godfather to his compatriot’s daughter Alisa, only has kind words for him.

It was at the press conference after his win over Croatian qualifier Dino Prizmic in the first round of the US Open that he was asked about Medvedev’s conduct. The former World No.1 crashed out of the US Open with a five-set defeat to Benjamin Bonzi, but the match was filled with drama, all thanks to a photographer.

The veteran freelance photographer Selcuk Acar walked on the court when Bonzi was serving for the match. Bonzi was later given another first serve chance by chair umpire Greg Allensworth, but his decision did not go down well with Medvedev, who went on a tirade against him, urging the crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium to boo Allensworth. Because of the crowd’s boos, the match was halted for six minutes before Bonzi served again, but he was broken.

Medvedev won the set as well as the next to force the decider. But he lost the fifth, losing a first-round match of Grand Slam events for the third consecutive time this season. His conduct made headlines all over the world, and Rublev gave his verdict on the same.

I’m not a good example that can say something, because the way I behave a lot of times is not a good example as well. How can I judge someone when I’m behaving sometimes the same way? And how can I judge someone who was No. 1 in the world and a Grand Slam champion?

Andrey Rublev said

Rublev will continue his bid for his first Grand Slam title and will next clash with Tristan Boyer, who defeated James Duckworth in the previous round.

It’s his life. If he wants to change and he needs help, he has me; he has a lot of other friends. He has family that will help him… This is his life, and his decisions that he needs to do.

Andrey Rublev added

Rublev has played the quarterfinals of every Major but hasn’t yet progressed beyond it. At the US Open, he reached the last eight in 2017, 2020, 2022, and 2023. Last year, he lost to Jiri Lehecka in the third round.

Nick Kyrgios on Daniil Medvedev’s US Open controversy

Not only Rublev, Nick Kyrgios also stayed away from criticizing Daniil Medvedev. After the controversy, the Aussie took to X and wrote: “Medvedev is the best.”

Kyrgios himself has made headlines due to controversial conduct since the start of his career. Arguing with the umpire, racket breaking, and controversial statements on his colleagues, former and current, among others, were the things he did on and off the court.

Kyrgios is not a part of the US Open draw, as fitness issues continue to force him to stay on the sidelines. He was last seen in action playing singles at the Miami Open, where he registered his first win of the season by beating Mackenzie McDonald in the first round.

The 30-year-old next paired up with Gael Monfils to play doubles at the Citi Open. The pair lost in straight sets to Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Hugo Nys in the first round. Since then, Kyrgios has not yet participated in a tournament.

While it’s uncertain what Kyrgios’ next tournament will be, Medvedev is expected to feature in the China Open next. He has so far reached just one final this season- at the Halle Open, losing the match to Alexander Bublik in straight sets. The 2021 US Open champion last lifted a title at the 2023 Italian Open.
