Alexander Zverev suffered a shocking first-round defeat at the Wimbledon Championships, his earliest defeat at a Grand Slam event since 2019. The German star revealed after the loss that he felt empty, while stressing that he has a mental problem. Fellow tennis star Andrey Rublev has now shared startling details about the 28-year-old’s depression.
Zverev had won the Munich Open in April and then reached the quarter-finals of the Italian Open. He also reached the quarter-finals of the Roland Garros before losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets. The German star ended the clay-court season with just one title and failed to defend the Rome Masters.
However, at the grass-court season, he found his form, reaching the final of the Stuttgart Open before making it to the semi-finals of the Terra Wortmann Open. His run at the events made him one of the favorites to win the Wimbledon title, but he couldn’t get past Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in the first round.
Rinderknech battled hard for four hours and 40 minutes to oust the third seed 7-6(3), 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 at the All England Club. Zverev left the court heartbroken after the loss and opened up during the press conference, saying that he didn’t find joy on the court again and that he feels very lonely personally.
Rublev, who has dealt with mental struggles in his career in the past was asked about it during an interview with La Octava Sports. The Qatar Open champion revealed that Zverev is struggling mentally with his game because he loves tennis:
It’s a very long and difficult conversation, but it has nothing to do with tennis. Tennis is the trigger for some players. In my case, tennis was triggering it for me. And I think Zverev is going through the same because he loves tennis, but it’s not about the results. In my case, I needed to do something with myself, deal with myself, and as soon as I started to deal with it, things started to improve…It’s not about tennis, it’s in general. Everyone has their internal struggles, everyone has their problems to face.

“Es una conversación larga. Zverev ama el tenis pero no tiene nada que ver con los resultados.
Todos tenemos luchas internas…”

Zverev holds a 35-14 win-loss record on tour this season. He’s currently just two match wins away from reaching a career milestone of 500 tour-level wins. Despite battling with form and poor results, he still remains in a good position to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin. He won the title in 2018 and 2021.
Andrey Rublev reached his 80th tour-level quarter-finals at the Los Cabos Open
Andrey Rublev reached his 80th tour-level quarter-finals after beating Alex Hernandez in his opening match at Los Cabos. The top seed hit 26 winners and won 92 percent (22/23) of his first-serve points against the Mexican. He was able to prevail over Hernandez 6-3, 6-2 in just an hour and fourteen minutes.

Los Cabos is Rublev’s first tournament after the end of the grass-court season. He’s competing at the ATP 250 tournament ahead of the other North American hard-court swing. He revealed after the win that he’s happy to secure the win against the Mexican wild card:
It’s not easy when you’re the top seed and you’re playing someone local, especially when you don’t know the guy. I’m happy that I was able to win today in straight sets, that’s the most important thing.
Rublev arrived at Los Cabos after his impressive fourth-round run at the Wimbledon Championship before losing to eventual runners-up Carlos Alcaraz. He will now face Emilio Nava in the quarter-finals of the tournament. Nava saved four match point in the second round after beating Yunchaokete Bu in the second round.
