Russian tennis star Andrey Rublev won the title in Madrid as he beat Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final on Sunday. The 26-year-old beat his Canadian opponent in three sets to lift his second Masters title. He came back from a set down to win the match 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in two hours and 47 minutes.
While it was being seen as a redemption for the Russian ace considering he came into the tournament with a four-match losing streak against his name, Rublev made some revelations that further elevated the stature of this win in Madrid. The 26-year-old revealed that his body was full of medication while he played the match.
Rublev said that he had been troubled by his body a lot ever since he landed in Madrid. He talked about his sore throat, his inflamed foot, and his fever. Rublev said that he overcame all of this to win the title. When talking about these issues in the post-match press conference, he revealed that he will go for a full-fledged checkup now that he has won the title.
Tomorrow we will find out what exactly it is. If it's Agnia or some virus but the throat is completely blocked and my throat for nine days (signals). It's impossible to swallow, impossible to eat, and headache full because of it. So for 2-3 hours painkillers full. Inside of me is full of medication.Andrey Rublev revealed after his win in Madrid.
Andrey Rublev over the moon after clinching the title in Madrid
Andrey Rublev was more than just happy to win the title in Madrid. The 26-year-old said that it was an unbelievable feat for himself considering what he had been through in the last week. He also declared that this ATP 1000 title was the “most proud title” of his career.
The Russian ace also looked back at the four-match losing streak and said that now that he has won the title in Madrid, it does not feel like he was suffering first-round exits in the last few tournaments.
I have no words. If you knew what I had been through in the past nine days you would not imagine that I would be able to win a title. I'm incredibly happy. That one week changed everything because now it looks like I was not losing the last weeks in the first round! I would say this is the most proud title of my career.Andrey Rublev said.
