World No. 10 Andrey Rublev did not have a convincing start to his 2025 season, with first-round defeats in Hong Kong and at the Australian Open. In the first round of the Hong Kong Open, Rublev lost to Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan, whom he recently defeated at the second round of the Rotterdam Open. In the first round of the Australian Open, Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca launched his Grand Slam debut in spectacular fashion as the qualifier took down Rublev in straight sets.
However, the Russian is now calmer on the court and is putting in real effort to improve his behavior during matches. At a press conference in Rotterdam, Rublev, keeping in mind his mental health, offered some advice to the younger generation.
I tell myself that confidence has to come back little by little, step by step. Every day you still feel a little fear. You think, ‘Okay, I did it today’, but maybe tomorrow the ghosts will come back. It’s like a person who is addicted to something—every day they feel a little fear. Today I succeeded, but who knows if I will succeed tomorrow or not?

According to Andrey Rublev, the simplest thing he can advise the younger generation is to always be honest with oneself. He believes that 99% of people in the world, even if they think they are, are not 100% honest with themselves. Rublev reiterated the importance of accepting oneself.
The 27-year-old is now competing at the ABN AMRO Open, an ATP 500-level tournament underway at Rotterdam, Netherlands. Rublev was the champion of this tournament in 2021, where he defeated Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in the final in straight sets. It marked Rublev’s fourth consecutive ATP Tour 500 victory.
Andrey Rublev will face Hubert Hurkacz at the Rotterdam Open quarterfinals
In the Round of 32 at the 2025 Rotterdam Open, Andrey Rublev defeated China’s Zhang Zhizhen in straight sets. Advancing to the Round of 16, Rublev encountered Fabian Marozsan. Though the match was closely contested, Rublev managed to secure a straight-set win.

Rublev now advances to the quarterfinals, where he will face World No. 17 Hubert Hurkacz. They will be facing each other for the sixth time in their careers, with the Pole leading their head-to-head 3-2. Their last meeting, which took place at the 2023 Shanghai Masters finals, was a memorable one, with Hurkacz triumphing and clinching his 7th ATP title.
The Rotterdam Open also features some other exciting lineups for the quarterfinals. On Friday, Daniel Altmaier will be facing Alex de Minaur, and Stefanos Tsitsipas will face Mattia Bellucci.
World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz, who made his debut at the Rotterdam Open this year, will face Spanish compatriot Pedro Martinez in the quarterfinals. Previous year’s champion, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, withdrew from this tournament, citing the need to rest after a long run in Australia, where he reigned as the defending champion.
