The career of Andy Murray seemed almost over on Sunday (July 28) evening but then came a magical moment at the Paris Olympics. The former singles World No. 1 and Dan Evans of Great Britain saved five match points from 4-9 in the Match Tie-break. They defeated Japan’s Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori 2-6, 7-6(5), 11-9.

Daniel and Nishikori led most of the match, with a score of 6-2, 4-2. However, Evans and Murray kept fighting. The British duo overcame a huge deficit in the momentum-filled Match Tie-break.

Earlier this year, Evans and Murray lost in the first round at Roland Garros. They will next face either eighth seeds Arthur Fils/Ugo Humbert or Belgians Sander Gille/Joran Vliegen. Evans had already won a three-set singles match earlier in the day.

The Britons have played together before. Last year, they competed in Washington but lost in the quarter-finals. They also played in the 2017 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, losing in the Round of 16.

This win would mean a lot to both Evans and Murray as they keep the bid of an Olympic men’s doubles Gold Medal alive. Evans is also competing in the men’s singles draw and progressed to the second round earlier on Sunday with a three-set win over Tunisia’s Moez Echargui.

On the other hand, it would mean extra special for Murray, who is set to end his professional tennis career at the Paris Olympics. The three-time Grand Slam champion competed in men’s doubles at Wimbledon this year with his brother Jamie but lost in the first round.

However, the retirement ceremony for Murray can wait for a few days as he makes way into the second round of the men’s doubles draw. The 37-year-old has already announced his withdrawal from the men’s singles draw.
