Find Out: Why Andy Murray believes Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic still dominate the NextGen players
Andy Murray, three time Grandslam champion was a part of the Big Four of Tennis composed of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and himself. However, after suffering a career-threatening knee injury, the Brit has seen a huge downfall and the Big Four is now narrowed down to the Big Three.
Andy Murray is only one of the few players who have consistently stood up to the likes of the Big 3 players. Barring Dominic Thiem in the recent times, there has been no player who can challenge the dominance of Nadal, Federer and Djokovic on a consistent basis. Andy Murray believes that it is the mentality of the Big Three players and their experience, which helps them dominate the NextGen stars.
“With any great player, I think it’s a mix of incredible talent, mental strength, single-minded focus, determination and a lot of hard work. They’ve all got good teams around them too which really helps,” Murray opined.
I also think that because tennis is such a mental game, the experience they have is a big factor now too. They are able to draw on that against the younger players, and (thus) still dominate the game,” he added.
Need a bit of luck: Andy Murray on why the NextGen players find it difficult to win majors
Andy Murray stated that winning a Grandslam is a tough task for any player. A player has to compete in seven rigorous games in the span of just two weeks to claim the title. However, more often than not, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have dominated the Grandslam stage.
Daniil Medvedev entered the Australian Open 2021 final at the back of 20 consecutive wins, however, he was outplayed by Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the final. Murray stated that winning a major requires a bit of luck to go your way.
“It’s obviously extremely difficult to win a Grand Slam, and unfortunately, most people judge success in tennis by that benchmark. Sometimes you need a bit of luck, alongside all the talent and hard work, to get you across the line,” Murray said.
