Novak Djokovic is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. He has won a record 24 Grand Slam singles titles, tying with Margaret Court. This includes a record 10 Australian Open titles.
Aiming for his 11th title this year, Novak Djokovic has stepped up his game, hiring former rival Andy Murray as his coach. This announcement was made in November 2024, a few months after Murray retired from tennis at the Paris Olympics.
Novak Djokovic will face some strong contenders on his way to the title including youngsters Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner, who ended the 2024 season as World No. 1, will be looking to defend his Australian Open title this year.
Carlos Alcaraz will be eyeing to be the youngest man to achieve a career slam with this tournament. The present record for this is held by Rafael Nadal who achieved this feat at the age of 24 by winning the US Open in 2010.
Novak Djokovic’s 2025 season so far
Novak Djokovic commenced his 2025 season at the Brisbane International. In this tournament he faced a major upset by Reilly Opelka in the quarter-finals. Opelka, ranked 293rd delivered an exceptional performance defeating Djokovic.
Andy Murray was however not there with the Serbian at the Brisbane International as he went for a ski trip with his family at that time. He joined Djokovic participating in several charity and exhibition matches during the Australian Open build-up.
During “A Night With Novak”, Djokovic hosted a charity exhibition at Rod Laver Arena. He teamed up with Qinwen Zheng to defeat Andy Murray and Victoria Azarenka in a mixed doubles match. This event raised funds for children’s charities.
Novak Djokovic will face 19 year old Nishesh Basavareddy on 13th January at Rod Laver Arena for the first round of the Australian Open. Should Djokovic win this title, it would be his 100th title and an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam title. This will bolster his claim to be considered the greatest athlete in history, according to coach Andy Murray.
